Sterling found its footing, the rand absorbed its hike, and oil fell on a halt. Whether any of it lasts will be settled by what Warsh puts on the June 16 table

The Iran-Israel halt came through on Tuesday, Brent surrendered 3.42% in a single session, and US May inflation data is scheduled to print this morning at 13:30 UTC with a 4.2% year-on-year consensus, a reading that would sit at a three-year high and arrive directly into the FOMC's pre-meeting window. Sterling recovered to close Tuesday's London session at 1.3390, lifted by a retreating dollar, while the dollar index pulled back from the two-month high of 100.21 it touched on Monday as geopolitical risk appetite shifted. The question that structures the next 48 hours is whether a ceasefire that has not reopened the Strait of Hormuz, a CPI print that could push Warsh's first dot plot into explicitly hawkish territory, and a rand sitting at 16.53 after the SARB's most unconventional policy decision in years, are pointing toward resolution or toward the next escalation.

The probability of a Bank of England rate hike by year-end has undergone a more complete repricing in the past month than most rate narratives manage in a full quarter. Markets that were pricing two cuts in April are now pricing one hike, with a 30% probability of a second, a shift that traces directly to a Governor whose language has moved toward acknowledging that the next move may be upward. Bailey's framing that higher inflation is unavoidable given the structural persistence of the energy channel marked the point at which the prior consensus ceased to be defensible as a base case.

Sterling closed Tuesday's London session at 1.3390, rising 0.42% as the dollar retreated from its two-month high following the Iran-Israel halt. The recovery reflected the DXY pullback as much as any sterling-specific catalyst: GBP's move from Monday's two-month low tracked the safe-haven unwind rather than any domestic development. The political backdrop remains unsettled. Keir Starmer's authority has been weakened by a sequence of government resignations, and that overhang continues to sit over the upside that a more straightforwardly hawkish rate outlook might otherwise generate.

The next two weeks carry unusual concentration of sterling-specific risk. UK May CPI publishes on 17 June, the day before the BoE's MPC decision, and the sequencing is compressed enough that a single print will shape the committee's language before it has time to develop a more nuanced response. A reading above 3.5% provides justification for a hold with hawkish framing; a reading below 3.0% introduces a materially different conversation. Neither scenario is straightforwardly good for sterling if what the market wants is clear directional guidance rather than optionality.

The rate expectations that have moved most aggressively are not about the June decision, which is widely expected to be a hold, but about the language that accompanies it and the committee's implicit positioning for July. Bailey's willingness to validate hike expectations without committing to a timeline has created a rate narrative that is hawkish in direction but imprecise in timing, and GBP is trading that imprecision at 1.3390. A hold with strong forward guidance pushes sterling higher; a hold with language that steps back from hike urgency pushes it lower. The data in between, today's US CPI and next week's UK CPI, will determine which of those scripts the committee can credibly deploy.

US May CPI is scheduled to print at 13:30 UTC this morning, and the positioning around it reflects a market that has largely pre-determined its response. Consensus forecasts cluster around 4.2% year-on-year, which would be the highest reading since April 2023 and the first cycle in which energy-driven inflation has compounded against a core that has not shown definitive signs of breaking. The dollar index sits at 99.93 this morning, roughly 28 basis points below Monday's two-month high, having retreated as the Iran-Israel halt reduced safe-haven demand. 

The direction of the dollar in the hours after the CPI print will be a clean signal of whether the market's current 70% year-end rate hike probability holds or begins its next leg upward. Kevin Warsh chairs his first FOMC meeting on 16 and 17 June, six days away. The meeting comes with a Summary of Economic Projections, including the first dot plot under his tenure, and a press conference that markets have been treating as the most consequential policy communication moment since the Hormuz crisis began. 

Core PCE at 3.2% is above the Fed's stated target; a CPI print confirming the 4.2% trajectory removes any residual case for a transitory framing and narrows the space between a formal hold and an explicit hawkish pivot from a committee whose composition and orientation Warsh has yet to publicly define. The context shift since last week is the sequencing of uncertainty. The Hormuz halt has occurred but the strait remains closed, which removes one layer of escalation risk while leaving the structural supply disruption unresolved. That repositioning has given the CPI a cleaner role: it is no longer one input among several competing for the committee's attention. 

It is the first definitive read on whether the disinflation the oil market has been offering since April is showing up in the data, and whether Warsh inherits a trajectory that supports his instincts or complicates them.

For businesses managing dollar-denominated obligations or receipts into the second half of 2026, the directional read is straightforward: a higher-for-longer Fed funds rate, confirmed by a hot CPI and validated by Warsh's first dot plot, means the USD continues to carry more structural support than it did in the first quarter. The uncertainty is in pace, and that uncertainty resolves in the next few hours.

At 16.53 per dollar, the rand sits at its weakest level since before the SARB's 25 basis point hike to 7.00% on 28 May, and that single data point contains the whole of the policy credibility question. The committee raised rates into above-target inflation, arguing that the fuel price transmission channel justified a pre-emptive tightening, and the currency's failure to recover the pre-hike reference rate reflects a market that accepted the decision without endorsing its timing. The rand settled roughly 16 cents weaker than the pre-announcement level of 16.37; for a move driven by a surprise hike rather than a dovish shock, that is a material discount on the typical credibility premium.

Tuesday's session changed the texture of that discount. Brent's 3.42% fall on the back of the Iran-Israel halt removed a substantial portion of the fuel-price risk that had underpinned the committee's hawkish logic, and the rand's 0.02% strengthening on the session reflects a market beginning to reassess whether the May 28 decision will prove prescient rather than reactive. The structural argument the MPC made, that oil sustained above $93 would transmit into a second-quarter CPI breach of the 6% upper band, looks less urgent with Brent now below $92. Every dollar below $90 reinforces the case that the committee was ahead of the curve.

The carry arithmetic has adjusted in parallel. A 7.00% repo rate represents South Africa's tightest policy setting since 2016 and provides a carry premium against G10 peers that is visible in the forward rate curve, which has repriced cleanly to reflect the new policy level. What it does not yet reflect is a scenario in which a sustained fall in Brent removes the inflation rationale for the hike entirely, opening a discussion about whether the committee overcorrected. That conversation is not the current one: with no SARB meeting until July, the interim signal will come through spot and forward markets rather than formal guidance.

USD/ZAR at 16.53 reflects a market watching two simultaneous variables: the Brent chart, which is doing the SARB's credibility work without requiring a further rate move, and the US CPI this morning, which will tell the broader EM complex whether the dollar's structural support has another leg in it. A 4.2% CPI print strengthens the dollar broadly and pushes USD/ZAR toward 16.60 and above; an undershoot below 3.8% provides the ceasefire-driven risk-on environment room to carry the rand back toward 16.40. The central bank has made its move. The next signal is not domestic.

The FTSE 100 closed Tuesday near 10,227, its second consecutive week of relative outperformance against an S&P 500 that posted its first weekly loss since March following a 4.2% drawdown in the Nasdaq on Friday. The divergence is visible in the sector composition: London's heavier weighting in commodity producers, energy companies, and defensive names has provided structural insulation from the AI valuation recalibration that has taken technology-heavy US indices lower, while Broadcom's earnings guidance disappointment reinforced the view that the AI capital expenditure cycle is entering a phase where expectations have run ahead of delivery. 

That insulation is a function of the FTSE's index construction, not a signal about the UK economy, but it has held for two consecutive weeks and the conditions that generated it remain intact. Brent is trading at $91.11, having surrendered 3.42% in Tuesday's session as Iran and Israel halted direct strikes. The pattern over the past seven weeks has been consistent: escalation episodes push Brent sharply higher, halts reverse the risk premium, but the Strait of Hormuz blockade, still removing approximately 20% of global seaborne crude supply, has not been resolved by the exchange-and-halt dynamic. 

The MOU pending Trump's signature as of 1 June has not been announced as completed; until it is, Brent's support floor at $88 to $90 reflects the market pricing resolution as probable rather than done. A formal signing at current levels would produce limited incremental relief; a breakdown of the current halt would push Brent back above $95 within a session. Global equities are navigating the transition between two dominant narratives. The Hormuz supply shock, which structured macro risk from March through May, is fading as Brent falls and the ceasefire holds. 

The central bank divergence narrative, in which the Fed is moving toward higher rates while the BoE and other G10 peers hold or contemplate cuts, is asserting itself in positioning as the June 16-17 FOMC approaches. The S&P's first weekly loss arrived in the same week as a May payrolls beat and the start of the FOMC pre-meeting blackout period, a combination that creates genuine ambiguity about whether the equity drawdown reflects valuation concern, calendar positioning, or both.

For clients with commodity-exposed FX positions, cross-currency supply chain costs, or equity allocations sensitive to the AI capital expenditure cycle, the next six trading days cover the majority of the year's remaining policy risk in a single window. The FOMC on June 16, the UK CPI on June 17, and the BoE on June 18 will collectively reset the rate expectations that are currently holding FX ranges in place. Entering those events with unresolved exposure is not a neutral position; the gap between where current positioning sits and where a single data surprise could move it is the active management question of the fortnight.

172,000. The NFP shock is priced, and now the inflation question has to answer it.

A May payrolls number nearly twice the consensus forecast has recalibrated the dollar's near-term trajectory in a way that one CPI print cannot undo but could significantly qualify. With 172,000 jobs added in May against an 85,000 forecast, markets have fully repriced a Federal Reserve rate hike by year-end, pressing GBP/USD to its weakest level since mid-April and amplifying the cost of dollar-denominated exposure for rand-holders and sterling-hedgers alike. Tomorrow morning's US May CPI is the first test of that repricing: if the energy component unwind from lower oil flows through in the data, the hike narrative faces its first material challenge before the FOMC has even convened. For clients managing cross-currency exposure through June's central bank sequence, the 24 hours between now and 8:30 Eastern on Wednesday carry more information value than the three weeks that follow.

The consensus that has settled around sterling heading into this week is uncomfortable but increasingly hard to argue with: GBP/USD is, right now, a dollar story, and the dollar's near-term direction was written by last Friday's payrolls number. Sterling closed Monday's London session at 1.3337, its weakest level since mid-April, after May non-farm payrolls came in at 172,000, almost exactly double the 85,000 consensus, and markets responded by fully pricing a Federal Reserve rate hike before year-end. 

The decline from 1.3441 over the previous week reflects the dollar move, not a sterling-specific deterioration: the domestic picture for the UK has not worsened materially, and the currency is effectively being priced as a high-beta vehicle for the Fed expectations trade. The Bank of England's June 18 MPC decision is nine days away, and the incoming data has not shifted the committee's calculus in any direction since last week. A hold at 3.75% is almost universally expected, reinforced by April's 8-1 vote and the subsequent softening of UK labour market data. The pre-meeting blackout is now active, which means there are no further domestic signals available before the decision. 

What the committee will deliver alongside the hold is language: whether Governor Bailey signals any opening toward accommodation, extends the current neutral framing, or retains residual hawkish optionality in the face of ongoing energy risk. That language is what June 18 is actually about. The more immediate question for sterling is what tomorrow's US CPI print does to the dollar's post-NFP narrative. In the Asian session this morning, GBP/USD has already begun recovering toward 1.34, suggesting pre-CPI positioning by participants who expect the May inflation reading to be softer than April's 3.8% headline. 

If the energy component unwind from Brent's descent from its April peak comes through in the data, the year-end hike pricing softens and the pound's relief trade has room to extend. If the number is sticky, the NFP narrative consolidates and 1.33 becomes the test. Thursday's April GDP monthly estimate from the ONS adds a second domestic variable to the week. Services were the main driver of Q1's 0.6% quarterly expansion, and any softness in April's activity data would sharpen the case for a more accommodative BoE tone on June 18. 

Strong data, on the other hand, gives the committee cover to hold the current neutral framing without appearing inactive in the face of an externally driven currency selloff. Sterling's near-term range of 1.32 to 1.36, now the sell-side consensus, implies the currency is neither cheap nor expensive against the current policy backdrop. The divergence between what the BoE will do and what the Fed might yet do is not fully resolved in either direction, and for businesses managing GBP receivables or sterling-denominated liabilities through the summer, the June 18 language is the next genuine information point, not tomorrow's US data.

172,000. Against a forecast of 85,000 and a prior month revised upward to 179,000, the May non-farm payrolls figure that landed last Friday reset the dollar's trajectory in a single data point. The Dollar Index climbed above 100 for the first time since April, markets moved to fully price a Federal Reserve rate hike by December, and every cross that had been trading on the assumption of a prolonged Fed hold repriced simultaneously. A payrolls number nearly double the consensus is not a data revision story; it is a structural recalibration, and the dollar is now trading that way.

The FOMC meets on June 16 and 17, with Chair Warsh presiding over his first rate decision. Updated economic projections accompany the meeting, forcing the committee to formally incorporate both the NFP beat and the May CPI print, which lands tomorrow morning. The sequencing is important. A sticky CPI following the payrolls beat leaves the June meeting with no credible path to a dovish signal, and markets would reprice any remaining cut expectations for 2026 out of the curve entirely. A softer reading, reflecting the oil disinflation that Brent's decline from its April crisis peak ought to have delivered, would allow Warsh to hold while acknowledging the disinflation path is resuming. 

The dot plot on June 17 will have to navigate that distinction with precision. The Fed is in its pre-meeting blackout, so the next formal signal comes from the data itself. April's CPI headline came in at 3.8%, driven by the 17.9% annual energy surge from the Iran-Hormuz crisis. If oil's retreat since April flows through to May headline CPI, the reading should be materially softer. Core PCE at 3.2% remains the watch number; stickiness at the core, decoupled from energy, would complicate the path toward a hold-then-ease stance more significantly than a resilient headline figure, which the committee can attribute to base effects.

The dollar at DXY 100 is a level the market has been cautious around all year. The bear case that dominated earlier forecasts was premised on Fed cuts materialising; with cuts effectively off the table and a hike back in market pricing, that structural support for dollar weakness has been removed. For clients with USD-denominated liabilities or dollar-linked revenues extending into the second half of the year, tomorrow's 8:30 Eastern release is the most consequential single data point between now and the September quarter-end.

The rand arrived at this week carrying a structural advantage that the broader EM complex does not share, and a short-term headwind that has temporarily obscured it. The SARB's 25 basis point hike on 28 May — the first since 2023 — lifted the repo rate to 7.0% and prime to 10.5%. The decision was driven by an explicit inflation mandate: April CPI at 4.0%, forecast to average 4.4% across 2026, well above the revised 3% target. The MPC voted 4-2 for the hike, with Governor Kganyago anchoring the committee's rationale in second-round price risks from fuel and food rather than demand dynamics. The QPM's worst-case scenario flags up to three further hikes this year. The rand, for now, has a central bank that is tightening — and that matters for carry.
The problem is that the dollar is tightening faster in market pricing terms. USD/ZAR held near 16.30 through the first week of June, supported by the rate differential and a Fitch ratings upgrade — South Africa's first since 2005 — announced on 5 June. Then Friday's NFP landed at 172,000 against an 85,000 forecast, the market repriced a Fed hike by December, and the dollar reasserted across all EM crosses. USD/ZAR weakened toward 16.60 on Monday and is trading near that level this morning, its softest print in three weeks. The move reflects dollar strength rather than rand weakness: at 7.0%, the repo rate still offers a wide carry cushion relative to most G10 rates, and the Fitch upgrade has not been unwound. But the 16.60 level is technically significant — a sustained close above it would signal that US rate repricing is overpowering South Africa's yield support, and would shift the near-term bias toward the upper half of the 2026 range.
The SARB's position heading into Wednesday's US CPI is therefore more defensible than the spot rate implies. A soft CPI print — plausible given Brent's retreat from its April crisis peak — would ease the dollar, pull USD/ZAR back toward 16.35 to 16.38, and validate the carry narrative. A hot print consolidates the NFP move, tests 16.60, and brings the next SARB meeting on 23 July back into the conversation as a potential further hike catalyst. The bank's QPM has already modelled that scenario; what changes is the market's willingness to price it in advance.
For importers with rand-denominated cost bases and USD-priced supply chains, the nine-day window into June 18 concentrates more rate-path information than any single SARB calendar event. The rand's carry premium is real and wider than it has been in two years. Whether it is sufficient to absorb both a Fed repricing and an unresolved Hormuz premium in oil is the question Wednesday's data begins to answer.

The positioning shift visible in global markets this Tuesday morning reflects a market that spent Monday recalibrating around a single event and is now in a holding pattern. The S&P 500 posted its first weekly loss since March in the week just closed, with the Nasdaq leading declines at 4.68%, as the NFP beat sharpened rate anxiety and the prospect of a December Fed hike reintroduced a discount-rate headwind for long-duration equity valuations. The FTSE 100 slipped 0.4% over the same period. Both indices enter this week with upside capped by the same uncertainty: whether Wednesday's CPI confirms that the post-NFP dollar repricing is durable or opens a reversion trade.

Monday's oil session added a different layer. Brent crossed $98 intraday, its highest print since the early weeks of the Iran-Hormuz crisis, before retreating to $94.48 as Iran announced the end of its military operations against Israel. The retreat was substantial, roughly $3.50 from intraday peak to close, and this morning Brent is easing further toward $93.80. The move confirms that the Hormuz risk premium in oil remains sensitive to headline news and that the tentative US-Iran MOU, still pending Trump's signature as of early June, has not been sufficient to remove that premium from market pricing. 

A signed deal would be materially bearish for Brent from current levels; the unsigned deal leaves oil in a headline-driven regime with asymmetric upside risk on any de-escalation reversal. European equity markets tracked the oil volatility on Monday, with the region's import dependence making it a direct transmission channel for Brent moves in either direction. The JSE All Share is absorbing the combination of SARB monetary easing, currency adjustment, and oil volatility simultaneously, with no single dominant signal to anchor positioning.

For clients with commodity-exposed FX positions or cross-border supply chains priced in USD, the positioning question this week is less about direction and more about timing. The information needed to make the next significant positioning decision sits behind two gates: CPI on Wednesday and the FOMC on June 17. The carry cost of waiting for those gates is manageable. The cost of repositioning after the information lands, in a market that has already moved, is harder to control. The window between now and Wednesday morning's data release is the most concentrated period of forward-pricing clarity available before the central bank sequence begins.

The de-escalation trade is unwinding. Brent, the dollar, and sterling are all repricing at once.

Friday's payrolls report and Sunday's missile strikes arrived from opposite ends of the risk spectrum, but pushed in the same direction: dollar up, Brent up, sterling down, and the de-escalation trade that anchored last week's prices visibly unwinding. The payrolls beat, 172,000 new jobs against a consensus of 85,000, sent the Dollar Index to a seven-week high and repriced Fed year-end hike expectations to their most credible level since March. Iran's fresh bombardment of Israeli targets, the first since a fragile ceasefire took hold in April, collapsed the Hormuz deal optimism that had taken Brent from its peak to $92.40 by June 1 and is pulling it back toward $97 in early Monday trading. For businesses managing cross-border payments or structured FX exposure, this week's calendar, SA GDP tomorrow, US CPI on Wednesday, FOMC on 16 June, BoE on 18 June, is the most consequential concentration of event risk since the Hormuz crisis began.

Sterling's position heading into the June 18 Bank of England decision deteriorated over the past week in a way that most analysts did not anticipate at the start of it. By Friday's close, following the sharpest single-session dollar rally in seven weeks, the question facing the pound had shifted from whether the BoE would eventually hike to how far the widening in Fed-BoE policy expectations will push cable before the MPC meeting arrives. Sterling fell to 1.3405 in Friday's London session, its weakest level since 15 May, at a moment when it was already carrying no near-term domestic catalysts on the other side of the trade.

The domestic data picture has not shifted the BoE's June 18 calculus materially; what has shifted is the comparative framework. The Fed now faces a labour market that added 172,000 jobs in May against an 85,000 consensus, and the case for US rates staying higher for longer has strengthened in a way that the BoE's cautious language does not yet acknowledge. The April MPC vote, eight for a hold and one dissenting for an immediate hike to 4.00%, reflected a committee that saw no urgency. The NFP data has added urgency, but not to the BoE's own policy: to the relative rate differential that sterling carries against a dollar increasingly priced for a tighter path.

The May CPI release on 17 June, the day before the MPC votes, is the critical domestic input remaining. If it follows the trajectory that Brent trading back through $96 makes plausible, energy components will have arrested their downward path and the committee will face a sharper tension than the June 1 price implied: rising energy costs feeding inflation from above while the labour market softens from below. The single dissenting voice in April may find more company by June 18, or it may not, but the range of plausible outcomes for the MPC's accompanying language has widened materially since last week.

For businesses with sterling-denominated liabilities or GBP receivables hedged against a BoE hold scenario, the window between here and June 18 is one where the risk to spot rate sits more clearly to the downside than it did seven days ago. The currency's next tradeable direction depends less on the BoE's June 18 vote, which will almost certainly be a hold, and more on whether the accompanying language signals a committee watching inflation rise again or one that has already decided the summer disinflation path remains intact.

The Dollar Index sits at 99.61 this morning, its highest level since mid-April, and the route there was defined by a single data point. Friday's non-farm payrolls report showed the US economy added 172,000 jobs in May, more than double the 85,000 consensus, with March and April figures both revised materially higher to bring the three-month average well above trend. The dollar surged 0.66% on Friday alone as positions built on the "prolonged hold and gradual disinflation" thesis were rapidly unwound. Iran's fresh escalation is adding safe-haven support at the Monday open.

The Fed's June 16–17 decision is priced at approximately 98% probability for a hold at 3.50–3.75%, and that will not change on this data alone. What the NFP print has done is sharpen the credibility of the year-end hike scenario. Markets now price roughly a 43% probability of a 25 basis point hike by year-end, and that number has direction. The labour market adding jobs at twice the expected pace, in an economy where energy costs are rising again rather than falling, leaves the Fed's data-dependent framing with progressively less room to accommodate a hold-through-all-conditions conclusion.

The FOMC's June 16–17 projections will be the first formal opportunity for the committee under Chair Warsh to respond to both the NFP beat and the resurgent energy story. The June 1 base case, that falling oil would enable the Fed to hold comfortably while tolerating gradual disinflation, has been complicated by Brent's move back through $96. If Wednesday's US CPI print shows energy components tracking higher rather than lower, the June 17 statement will need to accommodate that, and the shift from "hold" to "hold with a hike bias" is not a large semantic step from where the committee's communications currently sit.

For clients with dollar-denominated costs or revenues extending into Q3, the direction of travel is clearer now than it was a week ago. The dollar is not pricing a hike, but it is pricing a world in which the hike option remains credible and open. That asymmetry, where a soft CPI on Wednesday changes little but a hot print compresses the timeline materially, is the structure within which the dollar trades this week.

South Africa's Q1 2026 GDP figures publish tomorrow at 11:00 SAST, and the timing is pointed in a specific way. When the SARB voted to cut rates to 6.50% on 28 May, the committee's central argument was that the 4.2% headline inflation reading reflected an external supply-side shock rather than a domestic demand dynamic, and that Brent settling in the low $90s validated that thesis. Since that decision, Brent has moved from $92.40 to $96.71, with today's session alone adding nearly $4 to the reversal as Sunday's Iran strikes reached the market. 

Tomorrow's GDP print now carries an additional weight: a weak Q1 reading would offer the SARB a growth argument just as its inflation argument is being directly tested by the oil chart. The rand closed Friday's JSE session at 16.55, having weakened approximately 1.1% against the dollar across the prior week. The pressure came from two directions simultaneously: the NFP-driven dollar rally, which sent DXY to a seven-week high, and a deteriorating Hormuz outlook that reasserted oil's import cost burden on South Africa's trade account. 

USD/ZAR at 16.55 is not the crisis level of March, but the combination of conditions converging this week, a strong dollar, resurgent oil, and a GDP print with no clear directional consensus, is exactly the environment in which orderly weakness can become disorderly quickly. For businesses managing cross-currency exposure through June, the brief's working assumption has changed: the Hormuz timeline is weeks rather than days, and the hedging window that appeared to be closing has reopened at a wider spread.

Sterling recovered to 1.3454 in yesterday's session, finding support in a manufacturing survey that arrived without much fanfare and carries considerable weight for the Bank of England's framing ahead of 18 June. Faced with that, the SARB chose to defend the target now rather than risk a more expensive correction later, judging the inflation risk more pressing than the cost of higher borrowing to a low-growth economy. The 4-2 split shows the decision was genuinely contested, but the majority treated the overlapping supply shocks as the greater danger.

What has changed since the decision is the very shock the hike was built to contain. When the committee moved, the oil story was still pointing down; within days, President Trump's decision not to sign the Hormuz MOU has carried Brent from $92.40 back to $94.58, and the disinflation the bank might otherwise have leaned on has stalled. The rand's firmness is not a pure carry story. Iran's public position is that it will. Trump's public characterisation implies it will not. That gap is not resolvable through drafting adjustments. Current transit through Hormuz stands at two to five vessels daily against a pre-conflict baseline of approximately 70 per day. Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline has provided partial alternative routing, but at roughly seven million barrels per day it cannot replace the strait at scale, and the constraint is physical capacity rather than operational willingness. 

A reopening would deliver a supply impulse that futures curves have partially priced but not fully absorbed. The unsigned status means that impulse remains conditional, and conditional supply relief at $94.58 is Brent's current equilibrium. Global equity markets took Monday's oil repricing with measured composure. The S&P 500 closed broadly flat as the ISM Manufacturing PMI at 54.0 provided a countervailing growth signal, and the Dow edged slightly higher. The range of Brent outcomes over the next eight days is wide enough to change the direction of central bank communication on both sides of the Atlantic. A 60-day truce Washington hasn't signed has already done the work: cheaper crude, a softer dollar, a firmer rand.

Brent has just closed its steepest monthly fall since 2020, down around 17% in May, after Washington and Tehran were reported to have mostly agreed a 60-day pause that would begin clearing the Strait of Hormuz, an agreement President Trump has yet to sign. The relief is doing quiet work across every market the energy shock had distorted: Friday's softer US inflation print, a dollar drifting toward two-week lows, a rand that strengthened through its own central bank's surprise cut, and equity indices pressing fresh highs into a calmer volatility backdrop. The policy response has not caught up with the price action, and a week carrying ISM, euro-area inflation, the ECB and US payrolls is where that gap starts to close. For businesses carrying dollar, sterling or rand exposure into the second half, the question is no longer whether the inflation picture has changed but how quickly the central banks will admit it.

The clearest signal in sterling last week was not in the currency but in the curve. The sell-side read is that this was insurance rather than the start of a cycle. The framing from analysts is that an early, measured hike may reduce the need for sharper tightening later, and the Governor was explicit that the stance is less restrictive than it was in March. The risk scenarios the Bank itself set out, a prolonged conflict, an El Niño drought, non-linear price effects, are precisely the ones the truce takes off the table if it holds, which would leave the hike looking like a well-timed end to the pause rather than the first step of a tightening path.

That makes this week's calendar unusually loaded. Manufacturing PMIs and ISM open it, euro-area flash inflation and the ECB decision sit in the middle, and US payrolls close it, giving the market a sequence of reads on whether the cheaper-energy soft landing survives contact with the data. Gold, notably, fell on the month even as it firmed on Friday, a reminder that the dominant trade is still disinflation and higher-for-longer real rates rather than a clean flight to safety.

The dollar's morning retreat to 98.99 is oil-related rather than UK-fundamental, but the effect on GBP/USD is the same: sterling is holding above 1.34 on a Friday when the domestic growth picture is unambiguously soft, which implies the currency is being partly carried by a dollar that cannot lean into its structural case while the Iran deal is pending. If and when the deal confirms and the oil disinflationary signal firms, that support recedes.

The BoE's next meaningful communication is the August Quarterly Inflation Report, preceded by the June 18 hold. In the six weeks between today and that decision, the data shaping the August framing will begin to arrive: May CPI, Q1 GDP finalisation, and BoE speeches from Governor Bailey and external MPC members over June. Those communications, rather than the June 18 decision itself, are the next real information events for sterling.

For businesses managing GBP receivables, forward contracts, or cross-currency hedging between sterling and the dollar or rand, the current period is one of compressed but non-trivial uncertainty. Sterling above 1.34 with a weakening domestic picture and a softening dollar reflects a temporary equilibrium that will resolve once the Iran question settles. The hedging calculus shifts materially depending on whether that resolution arrives this weekend or this summer.

The Dollar Index sits at 98.99 this morning, retreating from Thursday's 99.28 close in a move that holds an apparent contradiction. CME FedWatch now places the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike by December 2026 at 54.1%, a steady climb from the 50% featured in earlier pricing this week, and the direction of travel under Chair Kevin Warsh has been toward a more hawkish interpretation of the committee's orientation. The dollar is softer anyway, and the reason is oil.

The Iran deal's approach is doing work in the dollar that no other variable is currently capable of doing. A confirmed Hormuz reopening would reduce Brent toward $75 to $80, removing the energy component from PCE inflation that has kept core readings sticky above 3%. The market is pricing the supply-relief narrative ahead of any formal agreement, and the dollar is being discounted accordingly. This is a rational trade but a fragile one: if the uranium stockpile dispute that Iranian officials raised on Thursday is genuinely unresolved rather than a final negotiating position, the oil basis for dollar softness evaporates quickly.

The structural inflation picture that drives the December hike probability has not softened. Tariffs have added an estimated 3.1 percentage points to core goods PCE since late 2025, services inflation remains sticky, and the labour market has not weakened enough to change the committee's read on demand conditions. The April FOMC minutes revealed a committee where three dissenters pushed back against any language suggesting eventual cuts, and that internal hawkish current has not dissipated. Warsh chairs his first FOMC meeting on June 17, and the first public signal under his tenure will set the interpretive framework for all subsequent meetings.

Thursday's PCE data confirmed core at 3.3% year-on-year in April, up from 3.2% in March, with the monthly reading at 0.2% against a consensus of 0.3%. The softer monthly print offered a fraction of reassurance, but headline PCE at 3.8% annually reflects the energy component's dominance: energy is doing the work, and energy is hostage to a deal that has not yet closed. The rand closed Thursday's JSE session at 16.28, its strongest close since mid-April, and opened Friday at 16.23 as the market continued to process what the SARB delivered the previous afternoon. The Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.00% on Thursday, effective from today, with four of six members voting for the increase and two preferring no change. The prime lending rate moves to 10.50%. The decision marks the first SARB hike since 2023 and resets the relationship between South Africa's rate differential and its currency's carry dynamics at the moment when global EM positioning is most sensitive to that number.

Governor Kganyago's committee framed the hike around three compounding risk scenarios: a prolonged Hormuz disruption driving sustained fuel price transmission into broader inflation, the increasing probability of an El Nino weather pattern creating agricultural supply pressure, and the risk that non-linear price dynamics could emerge if multiple shocks arrived simultaneously. With April CPI at 4.0%, up sharply from 3.1% in March, and with inflation forecasts revised to 4.4% for 2026, the committee's judgement was that early intervention carried lower cost than a reactive response once second-round effects were established. 

Growth forecasts for 2026 were revised down to 1.2% from 1.4%. The market's post-hike response has been calibrated rather than dramatic. The rand's move from 16.28 to 16.23 reflects carry dynamics working as expected: a higher repo rate expands South Africa's interest rate premium over G10 peers, attracting positioning from investors who had been uncertain about the direction of SA rates. The stability in Thursday's JSE session suggests the hike was well-flagged enough to avoid a disorderly repricing, even if the vote margin of four to two was narrower than some pre-decision commentary had suggested.

The SARB's credibility test runs on a parallel track to the Iran negotiation. The committee's reasoning depends on Brent continuing its descent. If the Hormuz framework closes this weekend and oil moves toward $80, the hike will look well-timed: it contained inflation expectations at the peak of the energy shock without over-tightening into the recovery. If the deal stalls and oil reverses toward $100, the bank faces a considerably more difficult conversation about having raised rates against a weakening growth outlook while the inflation driver remained active.

For South African importers, businesses servicing ZAR-denominated debt at the new prime rate of 10.50%, or clients managing cross-currency positions between ZAR and sterling or the dollar, the current 16.23 level is a post-hike rate in a pre-deal world. The directionality from here is shaped by the Iran outcome more than any domestic variable, but the SARB has established a floor in South Africa's carry story that was not present a week ago. That floor has a price: if the oil shock it anticipated persists, the same committee will need to decide how much further it is willing to tighten into a 1.2% growth forecast.

Brent is trading at $96.60 this morning, fractionally above Thursday's $96.30 close, and the contract is holding at a level consistent with a market that believes the Hormuz deal is coming but is not prepared to act on an agreement it has not yet seen. Trump stated on Thursday that the Iran-US framework was "largely negotiated" and that a formal announcement would follow. Iranian officials pushed back, disputing the terms for Tehran's highly enriched uranium stockpile, with state media characterising the US description as premature. 

The 60-day ceasefire structure, involving a Hormuz reopening, sanctions relief, and an Iranian right to sell oil, is agreed in outline. The nuclear endgame is not. The scale of the potential supply restoration has not changed. Hormuz transit currently sits at two to five vessels per day against a pre-conflict baseline of approximately 70. Saudi Aramco's East-West pipeline provides operational cover by diverting up to seven million barrels per day to Red Sea terminals, but this route cannot replicate full Hormuz throughput at peak demand. 

A confirmed reopening would add supply to a market priced for scarcity, and the disinflationary effect on energy-importing economies would arrive in phases over the following quarter, feeding into BoE projections, SARB credibility, and Fed PCE models simultaneously. The uranium stockpile dispute is not new. It has been the technical obstacle in every previous round of talks, and its reappearance at the stage when the deal was described as imminent fits the established pattern of these negotiations. Two interpretations are plausible. 

Either the dispute is a final positioning move before signature, in which case the deal closes this weekend, or it represents a substantive gap that has not yet been bridged, in which case the Brent rally reverses sharply on Monday's open. Both interpretations have historical precedent, and the oil market is holding the midpoint between them into Friday's close. Global equity markets have registered the week's geopolitical progress with consistent gains. The S&P 500 extended its winning run to an eighth consecutive weekly advance, the longest such run since 2023, with technology stocks contributing the largest share of index-level performance.
