Economists see one more ECB hike, markets see three, and today's projections begin settling it

Brent went through $102 overnight, its highest since May, and the first central bank that has to answer for it decides at 13:15 BST. A quarter point from the ECB is 99% priced, so the number that matters is not the decision but the gap behind it: 91% of surveyed economists expect the deposit rate to finish 2026 at 2.50% and stop, while the market prices 3.1% by late 2027. That gap is the entire argument about whether an energy shock is a price-level event or an inflation event, and the Bank of England answers the same question on 17 September with the Fed answering it next week. The rand has already given its verdict, surrendering a six-month high inside a session, which is what happens to a commodity currency when the commodity in question is the one it imports.

The consensus that shifted this week was the Governor's. Speaking to lawmakers on Tuesday, Andrew Bailey pushed back on the idea that another increase is simply a matter of timing, saying decisions would follow the economic and geopolitical evidence rather than run ahead of it. Within a day, Megan Greene, who voted to hike in July, warned that a prolonged oil-price shock could make inflation expectations persistent. That is not a committee walking together toward December, it is a committee arguing about what kind of shock this is, and the argument got harder overnight when Brent cleared $102 and UK natural gas held its highest level since late 2022.

The curve has not been rewritten, but the cost of waiting has been repriced. Yesterday's session left the ten-year gilt around 5.19%, and the overnight marks have it at 5.27%, roughly eight basis points higher and close to a nineteen-year high. That is a meaningful break, because it lifts the pressure out of the very long end, where it has sat since the summer, and moves it into the part of the curve that prices the Bank rather than the Chancellor. A market comfortable that the 17 September hold is safe does not pay eight more basis points for ten-year money overnight.

The long end is what makes it expensive rather than merely awkward. Tuesday's thirty-year auction cleared at 5.8168%, the costliest long-dated gilt the Debt Management Office has sold since it was founded in 1998, and the arithmetic that follows is now widely put at roughly £13bn of remaining fiscal headroom into the 28 October budget. The Office for Budget Responsibility locks its forecast window next month, which converts a market level into a policy commitment: every week yields hold here, a larger share of the budget gets written by the gilt market rather than by the Treasury.

Sterling declined the whole story. Cable finished yesterday's session at 1.3554, up 0.10%, roughly a third of a percent firmer over four weeks and broadly flat over twelve months, which is a currency handed a hawkish repricing and refusing to take the money. UK equities are indicated sharply lower this morning, the FTSE marked around 10,670 and about 1.3% below yesterday's close, with France down 1.9% and Spain 1.5%. The pound is not trading the rate path because the rate path is insurance against an imported price rather than a return on domestic strength, and the equity market is pricing precisely that cost side.

At 1.3554 cable sits 0.8% below the 1.3661 ceiling it has not cleared all year, 2.1% above the 1.3279 floor of the range held since late July, and effectively on the 1.3543 quarter estimate with a twelve-month path at 1.3812. The interest-rate leg leans mildly in sterling's favour and is well cushioned by a hike already fully priced for December. The risk is not the MPC. It is that another auction like Tuesday's, or an OBR window that locks headroom near zero, converts a fiscal-credibility story into a funding story, and that is the route by which 1.3400 comes back into range faster than the rate differential alone would justify.

The auction went well. Treasury sold $39bn of ten-year notes at 4.834%, the highest yield a ten-year has carried since 2007, and demand ran at 2.71 times the amount on offer, the strongest cover in years, with indirect bidders taking 79.2% of the issue. The paper cleared more than a basis point through where it traded into the sale. On the specific test flagged in yesterday's brief, whether anyone wants duration at these levels, the answer came back comfortably yes.

The yield rose anyway. The ten-year is at 4.845% this morning after touching 4.853% intraday, its highest since November 2023, because Treasury put a figure on its long-dated buyback and the figure disappointed: $6bn of ten to twenty-year paper, triple the size of the last long-dated operation, against a market positioned for considerably more. The two events are connected in an uncomfortable way. Part of why the auction cleared so strongly is that bidders knew they could sell into today's buyback window, which means demand that looked like conviction was partly a funding trade. Appetite passed the test; supply management did not.

The dollar is collecting on none of it. The index sits at 98.739, marginally lower again and still at its weakest in four months, with Fed pricing unchanged at roughly 60% for a hike next week. The reason is structural rather than domestic: the ECB decides at 13:15 BST today and the Bank of Japan on 17 and 18 September, and the yen near 153.35 is holding close to a seven-month high. Between them the euro and the yen are 71% of the DXY basket, so the majority of the index is currently repricing foreign policy rather than American policy, and a currency can lose ground on a rate differential that narrows from the other side.

Today's two prints land in the same minute and pull against each other. Producer prices at 13:30 BST are forecast at 5.3% on the year against 4.7%, with the core at 4.6% against 4.2%, a set economists read as implying a 0.3% monthly core PCE against 0.2% in July. Jobless claims at the same moment carry a 205,000 consensus against 206,000, still within touching distance of the near sixty-year low set in July. A labour market that will not crack, sitting alongside a producer price series about to absorb $100-plus crude, is the specific combination that keeps next week's decision genuinely live rather than pre-committed.

At 98.739 the index is 0.32% under the 99.055 quarter estimate, roughly 1% weaker on the month, 1% firmer on the year, and about 4% below June's thirteen-month peak, with the twelve-month path at 97.44. The setup is unusual for a currency days away from a hike: the yield leg is at a three-year high while the currency is at a four-month low, which is what happens when the rate advantage erodes abroad rather than at home. PPI this afternoon and CPI tomorrow, with consensus at 3.4%, decide whether the index reclaims 99 or the four-month low becomes a floor that gets tested rather than defended.

At midday the domestic economy files the report that Tuesday's GDP print made unavoidable. Manufacturing production for July lands at 12:00 BST, forecast at 0.2% on the month and minus 0.2% on the year against minus 1.7%, with mining production earlier in the morning. These are the two industries named as the largest drags on the second-quarter contraction, mining down 3.0% and manufacturing 1.8%, so the July numbers are the first monthly evidence on whether the disruption was one bad quarter or the beginning of a trend. The mechanism the national accounts exposed is worth holding on to: output fell while metal prices were strong, because the accounts measure volume, and rail and port capacity cap how much ore actually reaches market.

The currency, meanwhile, has already handed back what it took. USD/ZAR touched the low 15.99 area in yesterday's session, its strongest in six months and within a whisker of the 15.93 low set in late August, and it has since traded back up to 16.0374, a quarter of a percent weaker overnight. That is the second failed attempt at 15.93 in a fortnight. A level rejected twice inside two weeks stops being a waypoint and starts being a floor.

What rejected it is the barrel. Brent at $102.73 is up around 15% on the month, and for a net energy importer with a fuel-levy pass-through that reaches the consumer index within weeks, that is a direct hit to the terms of trade that the metals complex has to work harder to offset. Gold at roughly $4,414 and silver at $67.5 both recovered overnight from the sell-off that funded Tuesday and Wednesday's move into crude, and copper is holding near record highs, but the export side is now running to stand still. The domestic bond market has drawn the same conclusion, with the ten-year at 8.845%.

That leaves the 23 September meeting in a materially worse position than a week ago. August inflation prints the same morning as the decision, forecast to rise to 4.7% from 4.3%, and the fuel component now has a much higher barrel sitting behind it. A 25 basis point increase to 7.25% is priced, and Lesetja Kganyago has signalled the committee can respond cautiously to the latest shock while holding the 3% target. Hiking into an imported price, against a contracting quarter and a long end already charging more for duration, is the least comfortable version of that call, and the currency is no longer supplying the cushion it did on Monday.

At 16.0374 the rand is 0.7% weaker than both the 15.93 six-month low and the 15.9281 quarter estimate, and 5.5% stronger than the 16.98 top of the band traded since early August, with the twelve-month path at 15.3654. The asymmetry has flipped inside forty-eight hours. A week ago the question was whether the rand could clear 15.93; it is now whether 16.00 holds as support, and the answer rests entirely on metals and a soft dollar rather than on anything the production prints will say this morning. Tomorrow's US CPI and the 23 September decision are the two events that resolve it.

At 13:15 BST the ECB becomes the first of three major central banks inside eight days to set a policy rate against $100-plus oil. A quarter point on both the main rate, to 2.65%, and the deposit rate, to 2.50%, is 99% priced, and all 65 economists in the most recent Reuters survey expect it. Which is exactly why the decision is not the event. The updated staff projections and the 13:45 BST press conference are, because that is where the ECB has to state what it thinks the shock does next.

The disagreement underneath is unusually clean. 91% of surveyed economists expect the deposit rate to finish 2026 at 2.50%, and 78% expect it still to be there through the middle of 2027. The market prices a second hike this year and 3.1% by late 2027. Roughly 60 basis points of daylight, and every one of them is a judgement about whether energy stays in the price level or moves into wages. Euro-area inflation at 3.3% in August against 2.9% in July is why the question is live; core running well below headline is the reason economists think it resolves itself.

History is in the room. If the economists are right, this becomes the ECB's shortest tightening cycle since 2011, when it raised twice into an oil spike and later treated the episode as a policy error, and that precedent is doing real work in the arguments for stopping here. The counter-argument sits in the forward curve. Brent is at $102.73, up around 15% on the month and roughly 55% on the year, at its highest since May, with European gas at fresh three-and-a-half-year highs and no visible ceiling while strikes on export infrastructure continue. A central bank that assumes the shock fades is publishing an energy forecast, not a monetary one.

The cross-asset tape is reading cost rather than growth, and it is splitting by market. Germany is the outlier, the DAX marked at 25,597 and close to unchanged, while France is indicated about 1.9% lower and Spain 1.5%, the ASX closed roughly 2% down and the Nikkei fell for a third session. Bund yields at 3.44% are eight basis points higher and near fifteen-year highs going into the decision, French ten-years at 4.33%, and the US ten-year at 4.845%. Gold and silver, sold on Tuesday and Wednesday to fund the move into crude, have turned back up. That reversal is the tell: the market spent two days hedging the barrel and is now hedging the policy response to it.

At $102.73 Brent is 5.5% above the $97.41 quarter-end estimate, against a twelve-month path of $113.59 and an all-time high of $147.50 from July 2008. The level has already done what yesterday's brief said $100 would, which is reopen the assumptions: today's ECB projections, the Bank of England on 17 September and the Fed next week all have to publish a view built on a number that moved after their books closed. The asymmetry is no longer about whether the premium unwinds. It is that three institutions will set policy off three different assumptions about a price none of them controls, and the divergence that creates is what EUR/USD and GBP/USD trade on for the next eight days.

US strikes on Iranian tankers pushed Brent to $99, and global bond yields went with it

Brent is at $99.46 this morning, a dollar from a number that reopens every hedging assumption in the market, after US forces struck Iranian tankers at Kharg Island, the terminal that loads roughly nine-tenths of Iran's crude exports. The transmission is running through bonds rather than currencies: the US ten-year is at 4.80% and its highest since October 2023, German yields sit near a fifteen-year high, and a US ten-year auction clears at 18:00 BST into exactly that. What is telling is what is being sold to pay for it, with gold, silver and copper all lower while crude rises, which is a supply shock being priced rather than a debasement trade. For anyone carrying energy-linked costs against a sterling or rand base, the useful read is that the currency leg has gone quiet precisely because the pressure has moved into the rate and the input price.

5.82%. That is where the Treasury's 2056 gilt cleared at auction in yesterday's session, against 5.405% the last time the line was sold. A long-dated auction clearing more than forty basis points above its previous outing is not a rounding error, it is the market resetting the term premium it demands to fund a Chancellor seven weeks out from a budget he has promised will be disciplined. The ten-year sat around 5.18% and barely moved, which locates the pressure precisely at the very long end, where the fiscal question actually lives.

The reason the long end is charging more is not fiscal at all, and it is arriving through the gas pipe. UK natural gas has climbed to its highest since late 2022 as the Middle East escalation feeds through European energy, and Brent is a dollar from $100. For a country that imports the marginal molecule and indexes a large part of its inflation basket to it, an energy-led impulse hits gilts twice over: once through the price level, and again through what the Bank is then obliged to do about it.

The curve has already given its answer. Markets now fully price a 25 basis point increase by December and a second by March 2027, which turns the September meeting into a formality the market has priced straight past. The stated reason for waiting has been the Middle East energy path, and that path steepened again overnight. Deferring to a variable that keeps moving against you narrows the space for patience with every session that passes.

Sterling itself did almost nothing with any of it, holding just above $1.35 through yesterday's session and opening near 1.354, up 0.25% over four weeks and 0.06% over twelve months. That is a currency handed a hawkish repricing and declining to take the money, because the hike is being priced for the wrong reason: to contain an imported cost shock rather than to reward domestic strength. The domestic evidence supports the reading, with retail sales growth at a near two-year low and house prices falling year-on-year for the first time since November 2023.

At 1.3542 cable is 0.9% below the 1.3661 ceiling it has not cleared all year, sitting almost exactly on the 1.3543 quarter estimate and mid-range of the 1.3279 to 1.3661 band held since late July. The asymmetry is not in sterling: with two hikes already in the curve and a twelve-month path at 1.3812, the pound's own downside is well cushioned. The sharper risk is that the long-gilt repricing keeps running, because another auction like yesterday's converts a fiscal-credibility story into a funding story, and that is the route by which 1.3400 returns to range faster than the rate differential alone would suggest.

A ten-year note auction clears at 18:00 BST today, and it clears with the yield already at 4.80%, its highest since October 2023. Yesterday's three-year sale is what makes it the test that counts: it went at 4.474% against 4.291% at the previous auction, an eighteen basis point concession on the shortest and easiest of the week's three coupons. If the front end needed that much persuading, the ten-year is where the market finds out what duration is actually worth at these levels.

The dollar is not behaving like a currency about to be handed higher yields. The index sits near 98.80, a third straight session lower and still beneath the 99 level it defended from June until Monday, with Fed pricing unchanged at roughly 60% for a hike next week. Two forces are pulling against the yield. The yen has extended its run to 153.63 as the Bank of Japan's 17 to 18 September meeting is treated as close to settled and Washington keeps pressing publicly for it, and the offshore yuan is holding a three-year high after China's August inflation data. Close to a third of the DXY basket is repricing foreign policy rather than American policy.

What has changed underneath is the composition of the inflation risk. Yesterday's household survey left one-year inflation expectations at 3.6%, unchanged, so the consumer is not the source of the pressure. Oil is. With Brent at $99.46 and 13.4% higher on the month, Thursday's producer prices are forecast at 5.3% on the year against 4.7%, and the core at 4.6% against 4.2%. A Fed that hikes into an energy shock is tightening against a price it cannot reach, which is exactly the argument keeping the ten-year from extending even as the front end concedes.

Equities are reading it as a cost problem rather than a growth one. US futures are little changed after a session that took the Dow down 0.81% and the Nasdaq 0.44%, with small-business optimism slipping to 98.7 against a 99.3 consensus. Gold, the market's chosen hedge for the previous two sessions, has given ground to around $4,373 while crude rose, and copper is off 0.86%. When the metals complex sells and the barrel bids, the market is pricing a supply shock rather than a debasement.

At 98.80 the index is 0.26% under the 99.055 quarter estimate, roughly 1% weaker on the month, 1% firmer on the year, and about 4% below June's thirteen-month peak, with the twelve-month path at 97.44. The setup is unusually one-sided for a currency days from a hike: the yield leg is doing all the work and the currency is taking none of it, because both of the dollar's largest counterparts are tightening into the same shock. Friday's CPI, with consensus at 3.4%, is what decides whether 99 is reclaimed or 98 becomes the level to defend, and today's auction is the first honest read on whether anyone wants the duration at these yields.

The rand did not move. South Africa reported its first quarterly contraction in six quarters yesterday morning, GDP down 0.2% against a consensus of -0.1% and a previous quarter of 0.4%, with the annual rate cut to 0.9% from 1.9%, and USD/ZAR finished the session at 16.00, within a quarter of a cent of where it opened. A currency that ignores a contraction is not being irrational, it is telling you what it is actually trading.

What it is actually trading is offshore. The rand's 1.19% gain over four weeks and 8.41% over twelve months was built on the export complex and a soft dollar rather than on domestic activity, which is why the fall in output registered in the bond market instead of the currency. The three long-dated auctions that cleared alongside the print all came in wider: the 2038 at 9.051% against 8.966%, the 2040 at 9.239% against 9.202%, and the 2044 at 9.366% against 9.196%. Seventeen basis points of extra yield on the longest line is the domestic market's real verdict on the quarter.

The contraction also has an author, and it is the same one driving today's oil price. The composition points squarely at the energy-intensive sectors, with mining and manufacturing disrupted as the conflict pushed input costs higher, which means the growth shock and the inflation shock are one event rather than two. That is an uncomfortable position for a committee meeting on 23 September, where a 25 basis point increase is priced and August inflation prints the same morning, forecast to rise to 4.7% from 4.3%.

The Governor has left himself room. Lesetja Kganyago has signalled that the committee can afford to respond cautiously to the latest inflation shock while holding to the 3% target, language that reads as a hedge on a hike the market has already booked. Set against a contracting quarter and a curve charging more for long duration, the case for waiting has strengthened materially in twenty-four hours, and none of that is in the currency.

At 16.0035 the rand sits 0.5% above the 15.93 six-month low set in late August, effectively on top of the newly cut 15.93 quarter estimate, and at the strong end of the 15.93 to 16.98 band traded since early August. There is no cushion in the level, and there is now no growth underneath it either. The asymmetry runs one way: with gold about 1.3% below Tuesday's level and copper lower, a metals pullback, or a Reserve Bank that declines to hike on 23 September, puts 16.30 back in view, and the rand would reach it from a starting point that already assumes everything goes right.

US forces struck Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island overnight, and that one location is why Brent is a dollar from $100. Kharg is the loading point for roughly nine-tenths of Iran's crude exports, so an attack there is not a risk-premium event, it is a supply event. Washington framed the strikes as a response to an attempted missile attack on a US warship; Tehran answered with ballistic missiles toward Jordan and a warning to tanker crews near Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports to abandon their vessels, while Houthi forces hit the 400,000 barrel-a-day Jazan refinery in southern Saudi Arabia again.

Brent trades at $99.46, up 1.57% and at a near seven-week high, with WTI at a three-month high above $94. The products market is where the shock is sharpest. Heating oil is up 1.5% on the day and 99% on the year and moving toward a record, gasoline is 63% higher on the year, and European gas has extended its rally with the UK benchmark at its highest since late 2022. A crude price is still a negotiable input; a refined-product price at a record is a cost that has already been passed to somebody.

The demand side has stopped arguing. China's August inflation accelerated as expected and producer prices came in above forecast, ending the run of disinflation that had been capping the rally, and Chinese equities rose on it while the offshore yuan held a three-year high. Where a fortnight ago weak Chinese buying was the ceiling on crude, stronger Chinese demand is now bidding up African, Canadian and Latin American grades as refiners route around Hormuz. Both sides of the barrel have turned in the same direction inside a week.

The transmission into rates is visible well beyond the United States. The German ten-year is holding near a fifteen-year high at 3.36% with a Bund auction clearing this morning, Belgian yields are at a fourteen-and-a-half-year high, Finland's at a seventeen-year high, and the US ten-year is at 4.80%. Equity markets are not treating any of it as reflation: the ASX fell about 1%, the Sensex closed at a near three-month low, and Japan recovered only modestly after a 1.6% drop. Gold and silver are lower and copper is down 0.86%, so the hedge that worked on Monday and Tuesday is being sold to fund the one that is working now.

At $99.46 Brent is 2.1% above the $97.41 quarter-end estimate and 13.4% higher on the month, with the twelve-month path at $113.59 against an all-time high of $147.50 set in July 2008. The round number matters more than the small distance left to it, because $100 is where hedging mandates, fuel-levy formulas and central bank forecasts all get reopened at once, and nothing in the current supply picture caps it: the strikes are at an export terminal, the products curve is at records, and the ECB tomorrow and the Fed next week both have to publish a forecast built around a number that moved after they closed their books. The risk is no longer that the premium unwinds, it is that the level becomes the assumption.

South Africa may print a contraction this morning, fifteen days before a rate hike it cannot afford

The dollar index sits at 98.83 this morning, a second consecutive session lower and now below the 99 floor it defended all summer, which means the entire post-payrolls rally has been unwound in two sessions without the Federal Reserve saying a word. What did it was the yen, up to a seven-month high on expectations of more aggressive Bank of Japan tightening and a carry trade still unwinding, and the arithmetic matters because the ECB is expected to raise this week, the Fed is roughly 60% priced for next week, and the SARB is being priced for 23 September. The market's answer to a synchronised hike wave has been to buy the metals complex rather than the currency: gold up 0.63% to $4,432, silver up 1.28%, copper edging toward a record. For anyone carrying dollar costs against a sterling or rand base, the useful read today is that a dollar can soften while a US hike is being priced, because the pressure is arriving from the other side of the pair.

The Chancellor used his first major speech to talk to the bond market rather than the electorate, and the bond market charged him for it. John Healey pledged on Monday to maintain fiscal discipline and restore the UK's credibility with international investors ahead of the 28 October budget, framing the growth side around the National Wealth Fund and the British Business Bank drawing private capital into the regions. It was a deliberately orthodox set of commitments delivered seven weeks before he has to prove them, and the ten-year gilt finished the session at 5.18%, roughly five basis points higher than where it opened the week.

That reaction is the part worth reading. Yields had already come in from the 5.25% eighteen-year high set in the middle of last week, so the market had priced some relief before Healey spoke. Giving five of those basis points back on the day of a fiscal discipline pledge says the long end is not treating the speech as new information, and is waiting for the numbers on 28 October instead. A Chancellor who cannot buy any premium back with rhetoric has to buy it with the budget, which narrows the room he has to work with.

Sterling took the marginal benefit and little more, edging up toward $1.355 in Monday's trade and opening near 1.354. Over four weeks the pound is up 0.20%, and over twelve months it is 0.12% weaker, which is another way of saying cable has gone nowhere for a year while the stories underneath it have changed three times. With no UK data on the calendar today, the pound spends the session as a passenger in a dollar move being generated in Tokyo.

The rate story is where the discomfort sits. A hold on 17 September remains widely expected, while the curve carries a fully priced hike by year-end and a second by March 2027, so the Bank arrives at the meeting with a market that has decided what it will eventually do and given it no credit for waiting. Because the stated reason for waiting is the Middle East energy path, and Brent is holding at a six-week high, the justification for patience is weakening on exactly the variable the Bank chose to defer to.

At 1.3536 cable sits 0.9% below the 1.3661 ceiling it has failed to clear all year, within a whisker of the 1.3543 quarter estimate, and squarely mid-range of the 1.3279 to 1.3661 band held since late July, with 1.3500 having done its job as a pivot for a second session. The asymmetry has shifted rather than widened: with the twelve-month path at 1.3812 and the curve already carrying two hikes, sterling's own downside is cushioned, and the more likely source of a sharp move is the dollar leg, where a hot US inflation print this week reverses the yen trade and takes 1.3400 back into range faster than any domestic catalyst could.

98.83. That is where the dollar index trades this morning, below the 99 level it has defended since June, below the 99.055 quarter estimate it sat marginally above yesterday, and a full 0.5% below Friday's 99.3 close. The whole payrolls rally is gone in two sessions, and nothing in the Fed pricing has changed to explain it.

What has changed is the yen. It has extended to a seven-month high, with USD/JPY at 153.43 and down 0.61% on the day, on expectations of more aggressive Bank of Japan tightening and a carry trade that is still being unwound rather than closed. The move is not dollar-specific: EUR/JPY is down 0.61%, GBP/JPY down 0.63%, AUD/JPY down 0.66%, and the Japanese ten-year has slipped to 2.89% as the currency did the work. When a dollar index falls because 13.6% of its basket is repricing a foreign central bank, the level tells you very little about the Fed.

The Fed pricing itself is unchanged at roughly 60% for a 25 basis point hike next week, and the long end has stayed exactly where it was, with the ten-year at 4.780% ahead of PPI and CPI later this week. A front end holding two thirds of a hike while the ten-year refuses to extend and the currency falls is a market that has priced a tightening it does not believe will last, which is a position rather than a conviction, and positions are what unwind on a print.

The wider evidence points the same way. The Korean won is firmer at 1,341, the offshore yuan is holding near its 2023 peak, and Chinese ten-year yields are at a near two-month low, so Asian currencies are gaining ground against a dollar that is supposed to be days from a hike. Only the peso and the rupee are softer, the latter on oil and importer demand rather than on rate differentials. This morning's NY Fed one-year inflation expectations at 16:00 BST is the last soft read before the hard data, and a rising household expectation would give the hike trade something to stand on that the curve has so far declined to provide.

At 98.833 the index is 0.2% under the 99.055 quarter estimate, roughly 1% weaker on the month, still 1.1% stronger on the year, and about 4% below the thirteen-month peak set in June, having now round-tripped back toward the two-week low it bounced from on Friday. The setup asks two things of the dollar rather than one: CPI has to beat for it to re-earn 100, and the yen has to stop, because the twelve-month path already sits at 97.44. A soft print with the carry unwind still running is the combination that takes 98 seriously.

Q2 GDP lands at 10:30 BST, and the estimate is for a contraction. Against the previous quarter's 0.5% expansion, the projection is -0.1% on the quarter and 0.3% on the year from 1.9%, which would put the economy at a standstill fifteen days before a central bank meeting where the market is pricing a 25 basis point hike. Three long-dated bond auctions clear at the same moment, giving the local curve an immediate vote on whether it can absorb both facts at once.

The tension is entirely genuine. The case for hiking on 23 September is the fuel pass-through, with petrol and diesel raised sharply from 2 September and August inflation projected to come back up to 4.7% from 4.3% when it prints on the day of the decision. The case against is everything else: unemployment at 33.6%, business confidence at a two-year low, factory activity still contracting on the Absa measure, and now, potentially, a negative quarter. A committee that held in April and July on the grounds that the shock was temporary has to decide whether an energy pass-through into a stalling economy is the moment to change its mind.

The rand has priced none of that anxiety, because its support is not domestic. USD/ZAR trades at 15.99 after touching 16.02 in early business, and it is being carried by an export complex that had a strong session: gold at $4,432 and up 0.63%, silver up 1.28% and now 64% higher on the year, copper up 1.07% and moving toward a record, platinum 5% firmer on the month. Reserves helped too, with August holdings climbing to $75.95bn from $73.45bn, a three-month high that gives the SARB more cover than it had in the spring. The domestic ten-year at 8.745% is five basis points wider than Monday, which is a mild vote of caution rather than alarm.

The forecasting community has moved with the currency rather than the economy. The quarter-end anchor for USD/ZAR has been cut to 15.93 from the 16.11 carried a week ago, and the twelve-month projection to 15.37 from 15.56, a revision that effectively declares the rand's strength structural rather than borrowed. That is a striking call to make in the same week the growth data may turn negative, and it means the currency now has to deliver on a forecast rather than beat one.

At 15.9875 the rand sits roughly 0.4% above the 15.93 six-month low set in late August, effectively on top of the newly revised 15.93 quarter estimate, at the strong end of the 15.93 to 16.98 band traded since early August, and some 1.3% firmer on the month and 8.8% on the year. That leaves no cushion in the level itself. The asymmetry runs one way: the rand is being paid for its metals, not its economy, so a contraction print that removes the hike, or a metals pullback of the kind Friday delivered when gold fell to $4,376, brings 16.30 back into view well before the domestic case can be rebuilt.

Three of the world's major central banks are expected to tighten inside the same month, and that convergence is now the dominant global variable. The ECB is expected to raise this week, the Fed is roughly 60% priced for next week, the Bank of Japan is widely expected to move before month-end, and the SARB is being priced for 23 September, with only the Bank of England expected to sit out on 17 September. For the past two years the trade has been divergence, spreads widening as institutions moved at different speeds. What is being set up over the next fortnight is the opposite, and synchronised tightening compresses the rate differentials that cross-currency positioning has been built around.

The reason they are all moving is the same, and it is still holding above $97. Brent trades at $97.55, up 0.40% and hovering at a six-week high, after Iran said an agreement with Oman to manage shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is close to completion. That headline reads like de-escalation and is not, because a managed corridor implies Tehran's control over the waterway rather than the removal of the threat to it. Aramco's Jazan facilities near the Red Sea were struck again on Monday with limited damage, roughly seven million barrels a day still transits the strait, and the US strategic reserve has fallen below 290 million barrels, its lowest since 1982. The premium is being held in place by structural thinness rather than by fresh disruption.

The demand side is quietly doing the opposite. China's August trade surplus widened, but on exports that merely met estimates and imports that came in below them, extending the pattern of reduced crude purchases and lower refinery runs that has been capping the oil rally for a fortnight. Chinese ten-year yields at a near two-month low and the offshore yuan holding near its 2023 peak both point the same way, toward an economy exporting more than it is consuming. An energy shock meeting a demand slowdown is why Brent can sit at a six-week high and go nowhere for two sessions.

What the market is buying instead is the metals complex, and that is the tell. Gold up 0.63%, silver up 1.28% and 64% higher on the year, copper up 1.07% and approaching a record, all rising on a morning when a hike wave should be pressuring anything without a yield. Equities are not confirming a growth story either, with the ASX down 1.53%, the Dow off 0.60%, the S&P and Nasdaq flat, and only Japan modestly higher against a rising currency. Buying industrial and precious metals while selling equities and the dollar is an inflation trade, not a cyclical one, and it says the market expects these central banks to tighten into the shock and still fail to contain it.

At $4,432.88 gold sits 0.6% below the $4,461 quarter-end estimate and roughly 21% below the $5,608 record set in January, having been down at $4,376 as recently as Friday's payrolls reaction, with the twelve-month path pointing to $4,862. The unusual feature is that gold is being asked to price two opposing forces at full strength: a hike wave that should cap it and an energy-plus-debasement bid that should carry it, and for two sessions running it has taken the second side. That resolves in one direction or the other within a fortnight, once the Fed, the ECB and the Bank of Japan have all actually spoken, and until then the risk in the metals complex is a repricing of the rate leg rather than of the inflation leg, which is the side most cost bases are currently unhedged against.

The rand has begun giving it back, and now needs the SARB to defend 15.98

US forces struck three Iranian oil tankers over the weekend in retaliation for ballistic missile attacks on American warships, Tehran hit vessels linked to the US and said it would declare a restricted maritime zone beyond the Strait of Hormuz, and Brent opened the week at a six-week high near $97. That is a 10% move in a fortnight, and it lands on a market that spent Friday repricing a September Fed hike to 60% on a payrolls number that beat forecast by 106,000. The currency response is barely visible: the dollar index is up four thousandths of a point at 99.18, the US ten-year has not extended past 4.79%, and the rand has given back only 0.2% to 15.98, still within a third of a per cent of its strongest level since the war began in February. For anyone carrying dollar costs against a sterling or rand base, spot FX looks calm precisely because the repricing is happening somewhere else, in refined product and freight rather than in the pairs.

Ten days from the Monetary Policy Committee, the market now carries a fully priced Bank of England hike by year-end and a second by March 2027, and expects the Bank to deliver neither of them on 17 September. That gap is the story sterling has to trade this week. The Chief Economist argued on Thursday that moving now would reduce the risk of having to tighten harder later, which is the clearest statement yet of the case for going early, and the market's response was to price the tightening while leaving the September meeting alone. A committee widely expected to sit on its hands is not much of a bid for a currency.

The reason for the wait-and-see is external, and that is what makes it uncomfortable. The committee is holding to assess the trajectory of the Middle East conflict and what it does to energy prices and the inflation path, with UK CPI already back up at 2.9% in July from 2.6%. So the Bank is deferring to a variable that got worse over the weekend. If Brent holds near $97 into the meeting, the case for a hold weakens on exactly the grounds the hold was justified, and the committee arrives at 17 September with less room than it thought it was buying.

Meanwhile the long end has quietly given back some of last week's premium. The ten-year gilt sits at 5.13%, roughly twelve basis points below the 5.25% eighteen-year high it pushed to in Wednesday's session, having rallied when oil briefly eased late last week. It has not sold off again on this morning's escalation. That is worth reading carefully: the gilt market appears to have decided that last week's spike overpaid for the energy shock, which is a different judgement from the one the FX market is making, and it removes the fiscal-premium narrative that had been weighing on the pound without replacing it with anything positive.

Sterling took none of the benefit. Cable traded down toward a two-week low in Friday's session and opens near 1.3509, unchanged over four weeks and 0.3% weaker over twelve months. The pound has now spent a week failing to convert either a yield story or a relief story into direction, which tells you the marginal buyer is not domestic. With no UK data on the calendar today and US cash markets shut for Labour Day, the pound is a passenger until this week's American inflation print.

At 1.3509 cable sits roughly 1.1% below the 1.3661 ceiling it has failed to clear all year, marginally under the 1.3543 quarter estimate, and in the lower half of the 1.3279 to 1.3661 range held since late July, with 1.3500 now acting as a pivot rather than support. The asymmetry is two-sided but unevenly weighted: a hot US CPI puts 1.3400 and the 200-day average back in play quickly, while the downside is cushioned by a curve already carrying two hikes, and the sharper risk is a hold on 17 September that reads as dovish rather than patient.

Sixty per cent. That is where money markets now put a September Fed hike, up from roughly 50% before Friday's jobs report and back near the 63% the trade carried before Governor Waller talked it down midweek. The whole week's repricing has therefore round-tripped, and it has done so on a single number rather than a change in the policy debate, which leaves the position more crowded than it is convinced.

The number itself was strong on the headline and mixed underneath. Non-farm payrolls rose 162,000 in August against a 56,000 consensus, with July revised up to a 23,000 gain, so the two-month picture is materially firmer than the market believed a week ago. Unemployment held at 4.1%. But annual wage growth slowed to 3.1%, and while the moderation was smaller than expected, it is still moderation, which means the print supports the growth case more cleanly than it supports the inflation case the hike is supposedly about.

What has not confirmed the trade is the long end. Treasury yields rose after the report and the ten-year sits at 4.789%, which is essentially where it was midweek and no higher, despite a labour market that just surprised by more than 100,000 jobs. A front end repricing toward a hike while the ten-year refuses to extend is the curve saying the tightening it is now pricing is a response to energy, not to demand, and therefore short-lived. The dollar index reflects that ambivalence exactly: effectively unchanged at 99.180, holding above 99 but unable to build on Friday's rebound, with safe-haven demand from the weekend strikes supplying part of what little bid there is.

The awkward part is today. US cash equity and Treasury markets are closed for Labour Day, so Friday's repricing sits unchallenged for a full session with no domestic liquidity to test it, and the currencies that have been quietly outperforming the dollar keep doing so. The peso is at its strongest since 2024, the won is near a two-year high, and the rupee is at a two-month high, all while the hike trade is being marked up. A dollar that cannot gain against emerging markets on a 60% hike probability is not being bought on rate expectations.

At 99.180 the index sits marginally above the 99.055 quarter estimate, roughly 0.65% weaker on the month, 1.8% stronger on the year, and still above the 99 floor it has defended since June, around 3.5% below the thirteen-month peak set in June. With two thirds of a hike in the price, this week's CPI has to beat for the dollar to re-earn 100, and a soft print unwinds Friday's move with the safe-haven leg as the only thing left holding the floor. The risk is skewed toward disappointment simply because the good news has already been paid for.

The consensus on the Reserve Bank has moved, and it has moved in the rand's favour. Speculation is now building that the committee delivers 25 basis points on 23 September to defend the target range, where a week ago the September decision was being framed as a genuine coin flip. That is a meaningful shift for a currency whose strength had been sourced almost entirely offshore, because it hands the rand a domestic leg for the first time since the oil shock began.

The trigger is the fuel pass-through, not the currency. Renewed flare-ups in the Middle East kept crude elevated through August and produced another sharp monthly adjustment to petrol and diesel prices, which is expected to add to inflation pressures and forces the committee's hand in a way the previous two meetings did not. The Bank has resisted so far, holding in April and July after raising in May, and the case for continued patience rested on inflation falling to 4.3% in July from 5.0% in June, helped by softer fuel costs during the temporary truce. That relief has been reversed at the pump, and August's reading is the number that settles it.

What the market is pricing, then, is a central bank tightening into a weak economy rather than a strong one. Unemployment has risen to 33.6%, business confidence sits at a two-year low, and the Absa manufacturing downturn is deepening. The domestic bond market is not fighting it: the ten-year has come in to 8.695%, a one-week low and roughly twelve basis points tighter than midweek, which says the local curve reads a hike as credible inflation defence rather than as policy error. Constructive for the currency, poor for the growth outlook, and both true at once.

The offshore leg, meanwhile, has started to thin, and this morning is the first evidence of it. USD/ZAR closed Friday at 15.9512 and trades at 15.9823, a 0.2% give-back that arrives alongside gold at $4,406, down 0.6% and roughly 0.7% below Thursday after failing at resistance near $4,450, with silver and copper both softer and copper explicitly easing on Fed hike concerns. South Africa exports that complex. A dollar-rate story that pressures metals removes support at the same moment a $97 Brent price worsens the import bill, and the currency is now being carried by an expectation rather than a flow.

At 15.9823 the rand sits roughly a third of a per cent above the 15.93 six-month low set in late August, about 0.8% stronger than the 16.11 quarter estimate, and in the bottom 5% of the 15.93 to 16.98 band traded since early August, some 2% stronger on the month and 9% on the year. That is a demanding place to stand, because the level now requires the SARB to deliver on 23 September, gold to hold above $4,400, and the energy pass-through to stay out of the CPI print. This morning's 0.2% is the smallest of those three tests being failed first, and a further gold pullback or a hot US inflation number would put 16.30 back in view before the domestic case can be made.

Ninety-nine per cent. That is what heating oil has done over twelve months, against 47% for Brent and 64% for gasoline, and it is the number that tells you where this energy shock is actually being paid. Crude is the headline, but the squeeze is in distillate and refined product, which is what freight, manufacturing and logistics buy. European gas jumped 4.1% to €74.90 this morning on the same escalation, and heating oil is trading near record highs. An importer hedged on Brent is hedged against the wrong leg of this.

The weekend supplied the reason. US forces targeted three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for ballistic missile attacks on American warships, Tehran responded against vessels linked to the US and signalled it will introduce a restricted maritime zone beyond the Strait of Hormuz in coming days, and the US Energy Secretary confirmed the naval presence and the blockade on Iranian exports will be maintained. Fighting resumed last week after roughly a month of relative calm and has taken oil about 10% higher, with Brent posting its strongest weekly gain since July. This is now a shipping and insurance event as much as a barrels event.

Cross-asset, the response is strikingly narrow. Bond yields have not extended: the US ten-year is at 4.789%, the gilt at 5.13% and the bund at 3.3376%, all flat to lower against midweek, while the Japanese ten-year steadied at 2.93% on hawkish Bank of Japan expectations. Gold fell 0.6%. Bitcoin is down 0.8% at 79,678. Nothing in that configuration looks like a risk-off market pricing a widening war, which means the escalation is being read as a supply premium on one commodity complex rather than a systemic event.

Equities are confirming the same split, with a regional twist. Asian technology rallied hard, the Nikkei up 1.95% at 66,288 on a tech bid, Taiwan near a three-month high and Korean shares up on AI optimism, while European and US futures drifted lower and Australian equities fell 0.8%. Investors are separating the AI capital-expenditure cycle from the energy shock entirely, which works for as long as the shock stays confined to crude and product and does not reach input costs and margins. Refined product up 99% on the year is the mechanism by which it eventually does.

At $97.13 Brent sits within 0.3% of the $97.41 the quarter-end consensus expects, having covered that entire distance in a fortnight, and roughly 10.7% above where it traded a month ago with the twelve-month path pointing to $113.59. The market has therefore pulled forward the whole of the expected quarterly move into two weeks, which changes the asymmetry: from here the premium has to be paid for by fresh escalation rather than by the conflict that already exists, and the risk of a sharp unwind on any de-escalation signal, a resumption of Hormuz transits or a truce headline, is higher than it was at $90. The sharper exposure for anyone with energy in their cost base is not the crude price but the crack, and that spread has no obvious ceiling while the strait stays contested.

A softer dollar and steadier gilts hand sterling a reprieve, but the jobs number can take it straight back

For a week markets traded a single conviction, that the Fed would raise rates this month, and overnight it broke. A more cautious message from one Fed governor pared the hike bets that had run the dollar, gilt yields and the rand all week, the dollar slipped below the 99 level it had defended for months, and a sharp rally in the yen did the rest. Yet none of it is settled, because all of it lands hours before US payrolls, the one release with the standing to confirm the turn or reverse it. For anyone carrying dollar costs against a sterling or rand base, today is the rare session where the hedging picture is genuinely two-sided, and the number that decides it prints at half past one.

Sterling spent yesterday's session doing something it had refused to do all week: steadying. Cable held around 1.3534 after touching a two-week low near 1.3470, and it did so not on any domestic strength but because the dollar was coming off the boil. That distinction matters, because a currency that firms on someone else's weakness has borrowed its gains rather than earned them, and the loan can be called. The clearer tell was in gilts. The ten-year yield, which pushed through 5.25% on Wednesday to an eighteen-year high, backed off to around 5.16% as energy prices eased and the global bond selloff lost its momentum. 

That is a genuine change from the story that led this section yesterday, when the yield itself was the headline. The pressure that drove it has not gone, but for the first time in a week it stopped building, and a market that had been treating British fiscal risk as a one-way charge paused to reconsider. What has not changed is the domestic calendar's emptiness before the levers that matter. The market is now fully pricing a Bank Rate rise by year-end, with a further increase seen by March, and shop-price inflation at a two-year high keeps that pricing intact. 

But the committee does not meet until 17 September, when it publishes its annual gilt-sales decision alongside the rate call, folding the one variable the long end cares about into the same announcement as the one sterling cares about. Before then, the Governor's keynote at 09:50 this morning is the only domestic voice on the tape, and it speaks into a vacuum roughly four hours ahead of the American number that will actually move the pound. So sterling arrives at payrolls as a passenger. 

A soft US print that confirms the overnight repricing would let cable extend its reprieve on a weaker dollar; a strong one would pull the rug, and with no domestic catalyst to lean on, the pound would have nothing of its own to arrest the move. The fiscal question sits underneath it all, unresolved until the Chancellor's first major speech, expected as soon as next week, and the Budget on 28 October. At 1.3534 cable sits about 1.4% below the 1.3661 ceiling it has failed to clear all year and roughly 1% above the 200-day average near 1.3400, in the lower half of the 1.3279 to 1.3661 range held since late July. 

The recovered gilt yield and the softer dollar have bought it room off the two-week low, but the level rests on external relief rather than domestic support, and a firm payroll number would put 1.3400 and the 200-day back in the frame faster than the Governor's morning remarks could argue otherwise.

The consensus that has driven the dollar for a fortnight, that the Fed's next move is a hike, cracked overnight. A more cautious message from Governor Waller, cutting against the harder line the Chair set at Jackson Hole, was enough to pare the September-hike bets that had sat near two-thirds and to send the dollar lower with them. The index has slipped to 98.97, below the 99 area it had defended for three months, and the move has the signature of positioning being unwound rather than fresh data landing.

The yen did much of the damage. A rally driven by rising expectations of a Bank of Japan hike and open speculation about intervention pulled the dollar broadly softer, with the pair now trading down near 156 from above 158 earlier in the week. When the funding currency of the carry trade moves that fast, it drags the dollar against everything, and the index cannot hold a level the yen alone is determined to break. Underneath, the case the hawks were building was always an inflation case rather than an employment one, and the labour data has spent the week undercutting it from the other side. 

Wednesday's private-payrolls read of 38,000 was the weakest since January, following job openings that slipped and a quits rate below the level that signals a cooling market. The quantity of labour has been loosening even as input prices stayed hot, and a policymaker who reads market pricing as information now has a softer dollar and easier financial conditions to read alongside the oil that had been doing the hawkish talking. All of which hands enormous weight to 13:30. 

The reaction function is inverted from the one traders spent two years learning: with the Fed focused on inflation, a strong August print, or a re-acceleration in average hourly earnings, is the hawkish outcome that revives the hike, and a soft one is what takes it off the table. Consensus looks for around 53,000 jobs after July's outright decline, an unemployment rate holding near 4.1%, and wage growth easing to 3.0%. Watch the wage line as closely as the headline, because that is the number that speaks to the case the dollar has been trading.

At 98.97 the index sits roughly 0.4% below yesterday's level and about 3.8% under June's thirteen-month peak, having now given back the 99 floor that held all summer. The overnight move priced the hike lower before the data that would justify it, which leaves the dollar leaning on a number it has not yet seen: a hot print re-arms the case and puts 99 and a run at 100 back in play, while a soft one confirms the break and opens the way toward the low-98s, with the wage figure the more likely trigger of the two.

Through sixteen, and pressing the low. The rand firmed to 15.98 against the dollar in yesterday's session, back below a figure it had spent the week defending from above, and it got there on the same external engine that has carried it all along, now running with a second cylinder. The softer dollar and the unwind of the September-hike trade added to a gold price that has refused to fall, and the currency took the combination without a single domestic input to help. The gold channel remains the mechanism that matters, and it is doing more work than the move suggests. 

Bullion is holding near 4,480 dollars while nominal yields sit close to multi-year highs, which is not how a real-rate trade behaves; it is how a currency hedge behaves. South Africa exports that complex, so a metal that stays bid through a hawkish scare hands the rand a support sturdier than one built on hopes of easier policy, and the push through 16.00 is the clearest sign yet of it. The domestic picture, as ever, pulls the other way and has not improved. Petrol and diesel prices were raised sharply from 2 September as elevated oil feeds through, business confidence sits at a two-year low, the manufacturing downturn is deepening, and unemployment has climbed to 33.6%. 

None of that makes the Reserve Bank's September call any easier: it held at 7.00% in July after raising in May, and faces a genuine hold-or-hike decision, with July's fall in inflation to 4.3% already being reversed by the fuel increase the market can see coming. The vulnerability is that every strand of the rand's support runs through Washington rather than Pretoria. The sub-16.00 level rests on external flows that reversed inside two sessions once already this week when the dollar firmed on the Chair's hawkish turn. 

Today those same flows are hostage to a single number, because a strong US payroll print would rebuild the dollar and the hike case in one move, and the rand's second cylinder would cut out as fast as it engaged. At 15.98 the rand sits within about a third of a per cent of the 15.93 six-month low set last week, through the 16.00 figure and below the 16.11 quarter estimate, at the strong end of the 15.93 to 16.98 band traded since early August, more than 2% firmer on the month and close to 10% on the year. The setup is favourable but borrowed, resting on a soft dollar and a firm gold price rather than anything domestic, and the asymmetry runs toward giving some back: a hot payroll number or a fresh oil spike would put 16.30 back in view well before the local calendar could offer anything to defend the ground just taken.

Every road today runs to 13:30. The week's dominant trade, that the surge in long-dated yields was an inflation event demanding tighter policy, met its first serious challenge overnight, and it came from inside the Fed rather than from the data. A more cautious governor pared the hike bets, the dollar turned, the yen surged, gold held its bid, and bond yields eased in sympathy, the UK ten-year backing off its eighteen-year high and the US ten-year slipping to around 4.77% from Wednesday's three-year peak. A tape that had moved one way for a fortnight reversed in a session, and it did so before the number that could ratify the reversal or reject it.

Oil helped the turn. Brent has come off the six-week highs it set on the Hormuz escalation after Washington signalled the renewed campaign in Iran would be short, easing back toward 96 dollars with the front-month premium deflating as the supply scare loses urgency. That is the pressure that had been feeding the inflation case, and its retreat is why the disinflation-versus-energy argument suddenly looks live again rather than settled in the hawks' favour. Crude above 90 is still elevated, but a market pricing a chokepoint premium reprices quickly when the issuer of the threat starts talking it down.

The cross-asset picture that resulted is the risk-on mirror of the week's earlier fear. Equities firmed rather than sold off, the Nikkei rising as hike bets eased and European bourses opening higher, while US futures sat close to flat, consolidating Wednesday's tech-led rebound ahead of the print. Gold rising into all of it remains the signal that refuses to fit the growth story cleanly, holding near 4,480 dollars while official-sector buying stays heavy, a debasement bid that persists even as the inflation-hike bid it was supposed to track unwinds.

The single question the day resolves is which of those two readings survives contact with the data. A soft payroll number, or cooling wages, confirms the overnight turn: the dollar stays offered, yields drift lower, gold and equities hold, and the week's hawkish scare is remembered as an overshoot. A strong number, or a wage re-acceleration, does the opposite in one move, rebuilding the hike case, the dollar and the yield backup all at once, and turning the relief rally into a bull trap.

At 4.77% the US ten-year sits roughly 2bp below Wednesday's three-year high and well above where it began the year, the clearest single gauge of a market that has priced the Fed's next move as a hike and is now second-guessing it. Gold near 4,480 dollars remains about 20% below January's record above 5,590, having spent the week absorbing an energy shock and a hawkish scare at once and choosing the more durable bid. The balance of risk into the print is a market leaning dovish on a governor's caution but not yet on the data, so the asymmetry sits with the payroll surprise: a hot number has more room to move a market that has already positioned for relief than a soft one that merely confirms it.

Gold bounced off a four-week low as yields hit three-year highs, and the rand took the rebound

American employers added 38,000 private-sector jobs last month, the weakest print since January, and the market's odds on a September rate rise barely flinched. That tells you where the hawkish case now lives: not in the labour data at all, but in a Brent price that settled above $95 for the first time since late July after fresh strikes around the Strait of Hormuz. Global bond yields have gone to multi-year highs on the back of it, the UK ten-year through 5.25% and the US ten-year near 4.79%, yet gold has rebounded off a four-week low rather than fallen, which is what a market looks like when it is hedging the currency rather than the rate. For anyone carrying dollar costs against a sterling or rand base, the uncomfortable part is that both legs of the trade are now being set by an energy shock nobody in London, Pretoria or Washington controls.

Five point two five per cent. That is where the ten-year gilt yield pushed in Wednesday's session, the highest level since August 2007, with the thirty-year at roughly 5.89%, a level not seen since 1998. Sterling's response was to trade down to a four-week low near 1.3470 before settling around 1.3495. A currency is normally supposed to treat a yield like that as an invitation, because higher yields pay foreign holders to turn up and take the paper. The pound has spent the entire week declining it.

The answer sits in what the yield is compensating for. The move is partly a global bond selloff, driven by rising oil prices and increasingly hawkish central bank signals, but the British pace is its own story: twenty-six basis points added over four weeks and forty over twelve months, faster than either Germany or the United States. A new administration is paying more than 5.2% to borrow for a decade before it has delivered a single Budget, with that Budget now set for 28 October. What the long end is charging for is fiscal credibility, and a premium of that kind does nothing for a currency because it is priced as credit risk rather than carry.

The 17 September MPC compounds the problem instead of relieving it, because it is a supply event as much as a rate event. The committee publishes its annual decision on the pace of gilt sales alongside the decision itself, which puts the one variable the long end actually cares about into the same announcement as the one sterling cares about. Markets are already carrying a 25 basis point Bank of England hike priced by year-end, reinforced by accelerating shop-price inflation, so a hawkish rate outcome that arrives beside a heavier QT schedule would be read at the long end as more paper, not tighter policy.

Between now and then the domestic calendar offers almost nothing. Monetary Policy Report hearings and a Governor's speech on Friday morning are the only scheduled UK inputs, and the second of those lands four hours before the American payroll number that will actually set the tone. The Chancellor's first major speech in the role is expected as soon as next week, which places the fiscal answer after the market has already had a fortnight to price the question.

At 1.3495 cable sits roughly 1.2% below the 1.3661 ceiling it has failed to clear all year and about 0.7% above the 200-day average near 1.3400, in the lower half of the 1.3279 to 1.3661 range it has held since late July. The 1.3500 level has flipped from support to resistance, with 1.3550 above it and 1.3350 the next reference below the 200-day. The asymmetry is unusually clean: with no domestic catalyst before Friday and the long end pricing fiscal risk rather than yield advantage, sterling has nothing of its own to bid with, and a firm US services print today would leave 1.3400 doing the defending.

Thirty-eight thousand private-sector jobs in August, down from an upwardly revised 46,000 in July and below the 47,000 consensus, the smallest gain since January. The composition is worse than the headline: education and health services supplied 45,000 of it, with leisure and hospitality adding 16,000 and construction 12,000, while manufacturing shed 17,000. Strip out one defensive sector and private hiring in the world's largest economy was negative last month.

It is the second cooling signal of the week rather than an isolated print. Tuesday's JOLTS report put July job openings at 7.271 million, hires at 5.054 million and the quits rate at 1.9%, below the 2.0% threshold economists watch as a marker of sustained labour-market cooling. The same morning's ISM manufacturing survey came in softer than July's 55.6 with prices paid at 71.1, which is the shape of the whole problem: the quantity of labour is loosening while the price of inputs is not.

What makes today interesting is how little of that reached the front end. Markets are pricing roughly a 66% chance of a September hike, against about 40% a week ago, having touched close to 70% on Tuesday. Weak employment data has not dented the trade because the hawkish case was never built on employment. It was built on an energy-driven inflation path, and a chair who has spent his tenure saying he reads market prices as information rather than noise now has an oil price above $95 to read.

The dollar itself is the odd one out. Treasury yields reversed the decline triggered by the Treasury Secretary's expanded buyback programme and the ten-year went to about 4.79%, near a three-year high, yet the index could not hold its gains. Yen intervention speculation pushed the dollar softer on Wednesday even as yields held firm, and USD/JPY has extended below 158 overnight. The New York Fed president added a different reading again, arguing that rising long-term yields reflect a solid economy rather than inflation fears, which is not the interpretation the bond market has been trading since Friday.

At 99.39 the index sits marginally below the 99.44 quarter estimate it has hugged all summer, roughly 0.3% off Tuesday's high near 99.68 and around 3.5% below June's thirteen-month peak, still above the 99 floor it has defended for three months. With two-thirds of a hike already priced and the curve at three-year highs, the hawkish case is in the price rather than ahead of it, and the risk has quietly become two-sided. Today's claims at 205,000 expected and the final services PMI, then Friday's payroll consensus of 53,000 after July's 23,000 decline, decide whether the dollar re-earns 100 or hands the initiative to gold.

The rand has taken back most of what the Hormuz weekend cost it, and it has done so without a single domestic input. USD/ZAR fell 0.69% in Wednesday's session to close at 16.0490, and trades near 16.02 this morning, against 16.18 on Monday. Every leg of that recovery is external: a softer dollar, gold's rebound, and renewed appetite for emerging-market assets against the backdrop of a policy rate that still preserves an attractive carry advantage over developed markets.

The gold channel is doing most of the work, and the mechanism matters more than the move. Bullion hit an intraday low of $4,282 on Wednesday, its weakest since 7 August, then closed more than 1% higher and has extended to near $4,436 overnight, with silver up almost 2% alongside it. South Africa exports that complex, so the currency tracks it. What is notable is that the metal is rising while nominal yields sit at three-year highs, which makes this a currency hedge rather than a real-rate trade, and a bid built on debasement is a steadier support for the rand than one built on expectations of easier policy.

The domestic picture is pulling the other way, and it has been for weeks. Petrol and diesel prices were raised sharply from 2 September in the monthly adjustment, as the Middle East crisis keeps international oil prices elevated, adding to inflationary pressures. Business confidence sits at a two-year low, the Absa manufacturing downturn is deepening, unemployment has risen to 33.6%, and the ten-year government yield at 8.815% is at a one-month high. That is a fuel shock landing on an economy with no cyclical cushion underneath it.

None of which makes the September decision easier for the Reserve Bank. The committee held at 7.00% in July after raising in May, and the September decision is a genuine close call with both a hold and a hike in play. July inflation had already fallen to 4.3% from 5.0%, below the 4.5% forecast, helped by softer fuel costs during the temporary truce, which is precisely the relief the 2 September fuel increase reverses. The data that supported patience has been overtaken by an event that arrived after the measurement window closed.

At 16.02 the rand sits roughly half a per cent off the 15.93 six-month low set last week, below the 16.11 quarter estimate, and at the strong end of the 15.93 to 16.98 band it has traded since early August. Over the past month it has strengthened 2.85%, and it is 9.10% stronger over twelve months. The risk skews toward giving some of that back rather than extending it: the level is being held up by external flows that have already proved they can reverse inside two sessions, with Brent above $95 and the fuel pass-through still ahead of the next CPI print. A gold pullback or a firm US services number would put 16.30 back in view faster than the domestic case could argue against it.

The market has spent four sessions trading a single conviction, that the surge in long-dated yields is an inflation event, and this week a senior Fed voice publicly disagreed. The New York Fed president said rising long-term bond yields are not driven by inflation fears but instead reflect a solid economy. That lands with Brent settling above $95 for the first time since late July and the US ten-year near a three-year high, which is to say it lands in the middle of a trade that has already been put on.

The escalation behind it was fast and physical. Two oil supertankers, one Saudi-owned and one South Korean, were struck by projectiles while attempting to exit the strait on Tuesday morning, after which US forces launched a renewed round of airstrikes on Revolutionary Guard sites around Bandar Abbas and Chabahar. Iran retaliated within hours against Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait, all of which host American forces, while Kurdish authorities in Iraq intercepted ten explosive-laden drones near Irbil. Trump has threatened a significantly larger response should Tehran retaliate again.

The supply read is genuinely contested, and that is the part worth pricing. Vessel crossings through the strait fell from twenty-three last Wednesday to ten on Monday, yet the US Treasury Secretary said seventeen million barrels of crude passed through Hormuz on Monday, arguing Tehran does not control the waterway, and that the strait will be worthless within two years as the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iraq develop pipeline routes around it. So the market is paying a rising premium for a chokepoint that the issuer of the reserve currency is publicly arguing is losing its leverage, with Brent already up more than 30% from the start of the war.

Underneath the oil, the cross-asset configuration has quietly inverted. Bond yields are at multi-year highs almost everywhere, the UK ten-year above 5.25%, Germany at 3.37%, Japan at 3.02%, and euro-area hike expectations are building alongside them. Equities have split rather than sold off: US large-cap tech rebounded on Wednesday with Nvidia up 3.1%, Oracle 3.1% and Meta 2.4%, while the Nikkei fell 2.5% and Australian equities 1.3%. And gold rose into all of it. 

The Dutch central bank confirmed it has moved 86 tonnes of gold from New York and Ottawa to London over the past six months to improve tradability and strengthen crisis preparedness, which is not a trading decision, and official-sector net buying hit a record 289 tonnes in the second quarter.

At roughly $4,436 gold sits about 3.6% above Wednesday's $4,282 four-week low and around 21% below the $5,597 record set on 29 January, having covered a $150 range inside three sessions. Buyers are now working toward resistance near $4,450. The metal is being asked to price an energy shock and a hawkish Fed simultaneously, and this week it has chosen the shock, which is the more durable of the two bids while the strait stays contested. What breaks it is a services print today strong enough to keep the growth case intact while input costs stay hot, because that puts the real-rate trade back on top of the debasement trade and takes gold back toward $4,300.

The market has stopped asking whether the Federal Reserve will move this month and started asking what could stop it. American factories cooled in August, job openings barely shifted, and the September hike bet firmed toward 70% regardless, because the one subindex the chair is watching did not budge. Brent cleared $95 for the first time in nearly six weeks after a third round of strikes around Hormuz, ten-year gilts closed at their highest since June 2008, and gold has surrendered roughly 8% in a week. For an importer, the uncomfortable arithmetic is that the cost line and the funding line are both rising while the currency hedge that usually offsets one of them is doing neither.

Ten-year gilts closed Tuesday at 5.21%, the highest yield the UK has paid on that maturity since June 2008. The move was seven basis points on the session and roughly twenty-six over the month, and it came on the first day both the gilt market and the FTSE were open after the Summer Bank Holiday. Yesterday the question was what form the reopening backlog would take. The answer is now on the screen: it went into the curve.

That is the better of the two available outcomes, and it is worth being precise about why. Three sessions of accumulated pressure, an oil price back through $95 and a hawkish repricing across the Atlantic all had to be expressed somewhere on Tuesday. Sterling held near 1.35 through the session and has only slipped through it this morning to 1.3499, down a fraction on the day. A currency that absorbs a backlog gaps; a bond curve that absorbs one reprices in an orderly way and gives the Treasury a bill rather than the exporter a shock. On the day, the gilt market took the hit.

The reason the pressure lands so heavily on gilts rather than on cable is structural. UK inflation travels through regulated household energy bills more directly than it does in most peers, so a crude price at a six-week high is a mechanical input into next year's price level rather than an abstraction. Rate markets had spent the previous fortnight pushing the next Bank of England move further out as Brent slid toward $88. That logic has now reversed twice inside a week, and a curve carrying a fiscal premium since the summer's rule flexibility has to price both the inflation impulse and the borrowing cost of it at once.

What makes the arrangement fragile rather than comfortable is capacity. A curve at an eighteen-year high has already used most of its shock absorption, and the Autumn Budget is still in front of it. Every basis point the ten-year adds now raises the debt interest line the Chancellor has to fund in November, which narrows the fiscal room, which is precisely the thing gilt investors are charging a premium for. The mechanism is circular, and it has been running one way for a month.

At 1.3499 cable sits roughly 1.7% above its 29 July low of 1.3279 and about 1.2% below the 1.3661 ceiling it has failed to clear all year, so the range is intact and the currency has been the calm asset in a week that offered it no reason to be. The asymmetry sits in the relationship rather than the level: while the curve keeps absorbing, sterling stays range-bound, and the point at which that stops holding is a poorly received auction or a Budget leak, not another basis point on the ten-year. For anyone with sterling receivables to convert before November, the useful observation is that the currency's stability is currently being paid for by the bond market.

The August ISM manufacturing print missed on almost every line that measures activity and the September hike bet went up anyway. The headline came in at 54.6 against 55.2 expected and 55.6 in July. Employment fell to 51.2 from 52.8, well short of the 53.0 pencilled in. New orders dropped three full points to 53.7 and the order backlog fell more than three to 51.8. Seven of eleven subindices declined. On a conventional reading, that is a manufacturing sector losing momentum.

Prices paid did not move. It printed 71.1 for a second month, more than twenty points above the line separating expansion from contraction, and it is the subindex this Fed has made clear it weights above the others. July's job openings, released the same hour, were little changed at 7.3 million with hires and separations both steady at 5.1 million. Put together, the pair described an economy where demand is cooling at the margin while the cost of inputs is not, which is the configuration a central bank targeting 2% finds least tolerable.

The market read it that way immediately. Hike odds for the 15 to 16 September meeting firmed toward 70%, having stood at 64.5% on Monday and near 36% before the Jackson Hole address a week ago. The front end confirmed it, with the two-year through 4.39%, and the ten-year rose for a fifth consecutive session to 4.80%, its highest since January 2025. The thirty-year is at 5.28% and has now spent fifty-five days above 5% this year, the most in any year since 2006. The Treasury doubled its buyback operations to cap the long end and yields have gone straight through the effort.

The Dollar Index has taken all of that and moved almost not at all, sitting at 99.79 this morning, a shade firmer on the day. That understatement is the section's most useful signal. A currency that gains nothing from a repricing of this size is a currency where the repricing is already in the price, and that is a different risk profile from one that is still catching up. Today's ADP report at 13:15 and factory orders at 15:00 are the next inputs, but neither is Friday's payrolls, and the market has shown this week that it will discount activity data that does not carry a price signal with it.

At 99.79 the index sits just under a point above the 99 floor it has defended for three months and marginally above its 99.4 quarter estimate, having still closed August with a second consecutive monthly loss. With roughly 70% of a hike priced and the oil complex reinforcing the inflation case, the dollar no longer needs a hawkish surprise to hold this level, only the absence of a soft one. The asymmetry into Friday is accordingly lopsided: an upside payrolls print buys the index very little it does not already have, while a second consecutive negative month on payrolls would take the whole hawkish premium back to the 99 line in a single session.

Tuesday's South African bond auction told a plainer story than the currency did. The 2033 line cleared at 8.500% against 8.299% at the previous sale, the 2039 at 9.234% from 9.076% and the 2042 at 9.410% from 9.292%. Twenty basis points at the ten-year point and twelve at the long end, in one week, is not a rounding error. It is the price foreign investors are now charging to hold South African duration, and the ten-year benchmark closed at an over one-month high near 8.85%.

What the auction was pricing arrived an hour earlier. The Absa manufacturing PMI for August printed 45.8 against 47 expected and 46.8 in July, a third consecutive month in contraction and a deeper one. That is a factory sector shrinking into an administered fuel price increase that took effect today, which converts the elevated crude price into a measured domestic cost at the pump rather than a headline risk. A contracting industrial base absorbing a step change in energy costs is the combination that turns a currency story into a growth story, and the Q2 GDP print on 8 September is the next place it shows up.

The external supports that carried the rand to a six-month low near 15.93 last week have now both gone. Gold has fallen to roughly $4,302, down from about $4,677 a week ago, a decline of around 8% driven by exactly the rate repricing described in the dollar section. The dollar itself is holding near 99.80. South Africa exports the metal that is falling and imports the crude that is rising, which is why the terms of trade move against it faster than the headline exchange rate suggests. The rand slipped to 16.1823 this morning, a third of a percent weaker, and has now given back roughly a quarter of the ground it gained in August.

The policy question is genuinely open rather than rhetorical. Two committee members voted to hike in July against the hold, headline inflation at 4.3% still sits above the 4% upper tolerance limit with core at 4.2% and the firmest in over a year, and the August CPI print due on 23 September is expected to run materially hotter as the fuel adjustment feeds through. The Reserve Bank decides the same day. A committee that chose not to pre-empt the energy shock in July may find itself tightening into a manufacturing contraction, which is the least comfortable version of the trade-off it was trying to avoid.

At 16.1823 the rand sits roughly 25 cents above last week's 15.93 six-month low and about 80 cents below the R17.00 level it failed at in early August, so it remains in the better half of its recent range. The frame that matters is that the range's support has changed composition: in August the rand was carried by gold and a soft dollar, and today it is being held up mainly by a 7% policy rate and the carry that comes with it. That is a thinner floor. With the bond market repricing duration, the factory sector contracting and the fuel pass-through only starting today, 16.50 is a nearer reference than 15.93, and the 23 September decision is the release valve either way.

The scheduled event that matters most today is the smallest one on the calendar. The EIA crude inventory report at 15:30 is the only hard supply number the market will see this week against a Brent price that has now cleared $95 for the first time in nearly six weeks, and it lands into a market that has spent three sessions pricing disruption from headlines rather than barrels. US commercial crude stocks have risen in each of the last three reported weeks even as the price climbed, and the gap between those two facts is the day's most interesting tension.

The escalation ladder behind the price is real regardless. US forces struck Iranian targets around the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, framed as retaliation for attempted mine-laying in the waterway and an earlier attack on a US base, with an explicit threat of a larger response to any reply. Iran said it had already responded against US bases in the region and fired missiles toward Jordan, and a cargo ship transiting the strait was attacked overnight. Yet roughly 17 million barrels crossed Hormuz on Monday, which is the number that separates a risk premium from a supply shortfall, and for now the market is paying for the first.

The wider energy complex is moving as one, which is what distinguishes this week from the several false starts before it. European gas has reached a three-and-a-half-year high, coal is at an eleven-week high, and WTI sits near $90.75. That breadth is why the inflation read is travelling into rates rather than staying in the commodity column. Global yields went with it: Australian ten-years hit a fresh fifteen-year high, Japanese ten-years are near 3.00%, UK ten-years at 5.22% and US ten-years at 4.80%. The Bank of Canada decides at 14:45 into exactly this problem, with headline inflation at 3.0% on oil-driven petrol costs and every one of thirty-five surveyed economists expecting a hold; the statement's language on whether the energy impulse is treated as transitory is the market-relevant output, not the rate.

Equities are absorbing it unevenly and that is where the risk concentrates. The Nikkei fell almost 3% overnight and Australian shares nearly 2%, while the S&P 500 sits near 7,625 after two negative sessions and the Nasdaq 100 has borne the weight, down more than 0.6% again with the chip complex leading. Rate-sensitive and long-duration equity is repricing while the index level holds close to its highs, which means the aggregate is masking a rotation rather than reflecting calm. The yen at a one-month low near 160 to the dollar is the same story expressed in currency.

Brent at $95.38 now sits roughly $10 above the $85 average that official forecasters still carry for this quarter and about $17 above the month's low near $78, which puts it firmly in the upper part of its range rather than the middle. That $10 gap is the market's working estimate of how long Hormuz stays contested, and it is the cleanest single measure of the risk premium available. The asymmetry runs toward further firmness while the strikes continue, because there is no scheduled supply event between now and the next monthly energy outlook on 9 September to challenge it, and today's inventory print is the only number with the standing to try.

Washington's threat to Iran's main oil terminal pushed Brent toward $90, and the Fed's hike case just hardened

A new month opens with two forces pulling the same way. A Federal Reserve that spent Friday convincing markets it may still hike in September now has an oil price climbing back toward $90 to reinforce the case, after Washington extended its military threats to Iran's main crude export hub over the weekend. The dollar is holding its firmest tone in weeks and the ten-year Treasury yield is pressing toward 5% for the first time this cycle, while the rand sits near a one-week low around 16.15 and sterling reopens from a long UK weekend into the same crosswinds. Rising rates and rising oil rarely point the same way, and when they do, an unhedged importer is left with nowhere quiet to stand until Friday's US payrolls settle which force wins.

The pound spent the long weekend in the quietest possible conditions and now has to make up for it. With the gilt market and the FTSE shut for the Summer Bank Holiday, cable drifted in thin offshore trade and held near 1.355, barely changed, while the assumptions underpinning its recent range were being rewritten by events London could not price. Today both markets reopen into that backlog at once. What accumulated while the desks were dark was a combination, not a single shock. Brent has climbed back toward $90, restoring the imported cost pressure the previous fortnight had removed, and it lands on a gilt curve that was already carrying weight. 

Friday's session had taken the ten-year gilt up eleven basis points to 5.158%, the largest single-day move in the G7, on a curve that has held a fiscal premium since the government invoked the flexibility within its own rules over the summer, with the thirty-year anchored near 5.75%. The reopening forces all of that to be expressed in one session rather than absorbed over several. The oil move matters more for sterling than for most because of how it travels. UK inflation runs heavily through regulated household energy bills, so a higher crude price is a more direct input to the domestic price level than it is elsewhere, and July inflation at 2.9% was already energy-led. 

As Brent slid toward $88 across the previous two weeks, rate markets had pushed the expected next Bank of England move out of late 2026 and into 2027; the bounce back toward $90 reverses that logic, and the gilt curve reopens today having to decide how much of the repricing to give back. The fiscal side compounds it rather than offsets it. The Burnham government's Autumn Budget is approaching, gilt investors are already demanding a premium to hold the long end, and a fresh oil-driven inflation impulse arriving ahead of a fiscal event is an awkward mix for a market that has spent the year wary of exactly this pairing. 

A currency can carry a live tightening cycle or a fiscal risk premium; carrying both, into a reopening, is harder. At 1.355 cable sits roughly 2% above its 29 July low of 1.3279 and just under 1% below the 1.3661 ceiling it has failed to clear all year, so the range itself is intact. The specific hazard of a reopening is not direction but form: several sessions of accumulated pressure can express as a single gap rather than an orderly drift, and with the gilt curve the more likely release valve, sterling's path today turns on whether that repricing runs through yields in an orderly way or forces the move into the currency instead.

The dollar's direction this week is a function of a calendar rather than a level. Three data points sit between the market and a September decision that has become close to a coin toss leaning toward action: the ISM manufacturing survey and the July job openings report both land this afternoon, and August payrolls follow on Friday. Each is a chance to confirm or defer the hike, which is why the currency is trading with one eye on the clock. The repricing that set this up is already well advanced. 

Futures now put a 25 basis point September hike at better than 60%, up from little more than a third a week ago, and prediction markets are close behind; a move this month would be the first US rate rise since 2023. The front end has done the work, with the two-year yield near 4.36%, its highest since early 2025, and the ten-year pressing toward 5% for the first time this cycle. The dollar took its firmest tone in a month into the new week and eased only marginally to 99.53 this morning.

The reset traces back to one message. Friday's Jackson Hole signal that inflation is not meaningfully slowing reset the reaction function, making clear that the summer's softer prints had not convinced the chair, and the oil bounce since the weekend reinforces the inflation-risk read rather than complicating it. What had been a debate about whether the Fed was finished has become a debate about timing, with the mid-September meeting the live date. That is what makes this afternoon's data the swing factor. 

A firm ISM and resilient job openings would let the dollar argue the economy is strong enough to carry a near-term hike; a soft pair would combine with any payrolls miss on Friday to push the move out again. The vulnerability worth noting is that the recent firmness has been built on the hawkish premium rather than on growth, so the currency has more to lose from a weak data run than to gain from a strong one. At 99.53 the index sits just above the 99 floor it has defended for three months and roughly at its 99.4 quarter estimate, having still logged a second consecutive monthly loss in August. With better than a 60% hike priced and oil reinforcing it, the dollar no longer needs a hawkish surprise to hold its bid, only an absence of soft data; the asymmetry into Friday runs toward firmness on any upside print and toward a retest of 99 only if the whole run disappoints together.

After two sessions moved entirely by forces outside its borders, the rand's next test is a domestic one, and it is not a friendly one. From tomorrow, South African petrol and diesel prices rise sharply under the monthly fuel adjustment, passing the elevated oil price straight into the local inflation basket at the pump. An external shock is about to become a measured domestic cost. Today's Absa manufacturing PMI is the first read on how the sector is absorbing that cost. July printed at 46.8, a second consecutive month in contraction, with diesel already flagged as a renewed pressure on input prices, and the fuel adjustment arriving tomorrow compounds it. 

A manufacturing base that was already soft is being asked to carry a higher energy bill into the second half. The more consequential shift is in expectations. The energy shock has pushed inflation expectations higher across every surveyed group, with professional analysts' current-year expectations jumping to 4.4% from 3.6%, precisely the variable a hawkish-leaning Reserve Bank watches most closely. July headline inflation eased to 4.3%, but core at 4.2% is the firmest in over a year, and two committee members already voted to hike in July against the hold at 7.00%. The committee could yet find itself tightening into a shock it spent the summer choosing not to pre-empt.

Meanwhile the two external supports that had carried the currency to a six-month low near 15.93 have both reversed. Gold has fallen from around $4,700 to near $4,450 as the rate-hike bet firmed, and the dollar posted its best run in a month, so the rand slid to a one-week low near 16.18 on Monday before steadying around 16.15. South Africa exports the first of those and imports the oil driving the second, which is why it feels this particular combination more sharply than most.

At 16.15 the rand has retraced roughly a quarter of the distance from last week's 15.93 six-month low back toward the R17.00 level it failed at in early August. The setup now carries a rare symmetry of pressure: the external case of a firm dollar and elevated oil and the domestic case of administered fuel prices rebuilding inflation into a contracting factory sector point the same way, so 16.50 is a nearer reference than a return to 15.93 unless Friday's payrolls soften the dollar and Hormuz de-escalates at the same time.

One place name is doing the work this morning. Kharg Island, the terminal that handles roughly nine-tenths of Iran's crude exports, has now been named by Washington as a military target, and oil that was already climbing extended the move, with US crude above $86 and Brent back near $90. A market that had spent three weeks taking the Gulf risk premium out is putting it back in. The reversal is of premise more than price. The de-escalation case rested on recovering flows and a proposed Iran-Oman corridor; the weekend strike on Larak Island and now the Kharg threat have undercut it. 

A false weekend video claiming Kharg had already been destroyed showed how thin the information environment has become, and how quickly the market moves to price disruption on a headline. For now the threat is to the tail rather than the flow, with an estimated six to eight million barrels still crossing Hormuz each day, mostly from other Gulf producers. The structural read has hardened underneath the noise. Official supply forecasts do not expect Middle East output to return to near pre-conflict levels until early 2027 and see Brent averaging around $87 this year, which frames the current premium as a level to sit with rather than a spike to fade. 

Iran's report of a mined tanker and a seized bulk carrier near Bandar Abbas, disputed by US Central Command, keeps the physical risk live even where the barrels keep moving. Equities are the uncomfortable counterpoint. US indices opened the week in a risk-off tone as crude surged, after Friday's S&P 500 close at 7,711 and a 4.6% drop in the session's largest chip name, yet the volatility index is under 15, a complacency reading that sits oddly beside an oil bid and a ten-year pressing toward 5%. The Treasury has doubled its bond buyback programme to cap the long end, and yields have climbed straight through the effort, which tells you where the pressure is coming from.

Brent near $90 sits within about $3 of the August high around $93 and roughly $12 above the month's low near $78, so the market is nearer the top of its range than the middle. Oil and short-dated yields rising together while equities hold close to record highs with volatility this low is the configuration with the least cushion, and the signal to watch is the divergence itself: it resolves the moment either oil forces the inflation question or this week's data forces the Fed's hand.

Two things happened in the space of sixty hours, and they point the same way. On Friday afternoon Fed Chair Kevin Warsh used his first Jackson Hole keynote to say that better summer inflation readings had not convinced him underlying trends were improving, and the market moved its odds on a September hike from roughly a third to better than half. On Sunday, US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island after observing Revolutionary Guard units preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, ending a month of relative calm and sending Brent up close to five per cent to near $92.70. A central bank newly willing to tighten into inflation has just been handed an energy shock, which is the one combination that leaves no comfortable place for an unhedged importer to stand, and the rand is already telling that story at 16.18.

The UK is shut today, and the news that matters most to sterling arrived while it was. Summer Bank Holiday closes the gilt market and the FTSE for the session, so the pound is trading in thin offshore conditions near 1.354, barely changed on Friday's 1.3531 close, while the assumption that underpinned last week's move gets quietly demolished by an oil price nobody in London can respond to.
